PORTLAND, Ore. — Led by a record–setting performance at the net, the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team held off host Concordia–Portland 25–23, 25–22, 23–25, 18–25, 15–13 Friday afternoon at the Concordia Volleyball Classic. The match was the season–opener for both teams.

CSUMB totalled four solos and 28 assists for 18 team blocks, a school record against an NCAA Division II opponent. Its previous best was 17 in a 2014 win at Humboldt State. The Otters matched their overall record of 18 blocks set in a 2008 win over Division III UC Santa Cruz.

Juniors Hannah Haveman (Parker, Colo./Legend HS) and Baylie Pierson (Vista Murietta HS) led the Otter wall with a career–high nine blocks each. Freshman middle Mollin Helfrich (Pinole/Salesian Prep) added six blocks in her first collegiate match.

Thirteen Otters saw action Friday, but only one senior—outside hitter Kyra Galloway (San Diego/West Hills HS)—took the floor. The youth movement took its toll early as they fell behind 19–13 late in the opening set.

An 8–2 rally allowed CSUMB to tie the score at 21. The teams traded sideouts from there until Haveman and All–CCAA outside hitter Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) combined to stuff Camille Guerrero on set point.

A late rally couldn't save the Cavaliers in the second set, but it worked in the third to keep them alive. Concordia led wire–to–wire in Set 4 before a Haveman kill and the record–setting 18th CSUMB block of the day broke a 13–13 tie in the fifth.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Freshmen Mollin Helfrich and Kaylie Honberger combined to block Elyssa Rose on match point.

FOR OPENERS… The Otters improved to 4–1 in season–openers under fifth–year Head Coach Moe Melhart. CSUMB is 13–10 all–time on opening day dating back to their inaugural season in 1996.

ALL THEY ARE IS BRICKS IN THE WALL… While the Otters collected a school–record 18 team blocks Friday, juniors Hannah Haveman and Baylie Pierson each claimed a share of No. 3 on the individual blocks in a match list with nine apiece.

THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST … Not only did the Otter front row do a job Friday, the back row more than held its own. CSUMB collected 96 digs good for No. 14 on the CSUMB list for digs in a 5–set match. Freshman Madi Lombardi's 29 digs rank No. 15 on the individual list and were three off the freshman record of 32 set by Rachel Cookus against UC San Diego in 2012.
