Otters Drop A Tough Five–Setter To Cal State L.A.

L.A. takes final two points to spoil a strong Otter effort

SEASIDE, Calif. — The young Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team nearly pulled off an impressive upset before falling two points short as Cal State L.A. rallied for a 22–25, 25–21, 17–25, 25–10, 15–13 win Saturday night in The Kelp Bed.

The match was well–played on both sides from an offensive standpoint as the teams combined to make just 29 hitting errors in the match. In the end, L.A. was just more terminal, hitting .381 for the match to over come 18 service errors and 11 Otter aces.

After the Golden Eagles came back to force a decisive fifth set, CSUMB displayed a veteran composure that belied a its extreme youth. The Otters rallied from an 8–4 deficit to tie the set at 11–11.

The teams traded a pair of sideouts to level the score at 13–13, when Baylie Pierson (Vista Murietta HS) appeared to earn the Otters a match point. But Julia Azevedo came up with an amazing pancake to keep the rally alive.

Karla Santos rewarded the effort with her 21st kill to swing the match point in L.A.'s favor. Santos then hit line softly in transition to end the match.

Junior Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) led the Otters with 15 kills and 15 digs. Junior middle Hannah Haveman (Parker, Colo./Legend HS) hit .368 for the match and led both teams with three blocks. Senior Kyra Galloway (San Diego/West Hills HS) matched her career high with four aces.
 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… L.A. hitter Karla Santos recorded consecutive kills to break a 13–13 tie in the fifth set.

YOUTH MOVEMENT… Of the 10 Otters who saw the court Saturday night, Kyra Galloway was the lone senior. The Otter lineup featured five true freshman, one sophomore and a pair of juniors.

SHE'S ACES… Kyra Galloway's four service aces Saturday versus Cal State L.A. vaulted her up four spots on the CSUMB career aces list to No. 12. Her 65 aces are one behind Lacee Ventura (2010–13) for No. 11. She needs 11 aces to catch Katie Bos (76 from 2006–09) for a spot in the Top 10.

THEY'RE ACES… CSUMB's 11 service aces Saturday night were a season high and the eighth most in a 5–set match in Otter history. They were the most Otter aces since serving 12 in a win over San Francisco State on Oct. 12, 2018.

WHAT THE DEUCE… (with apologies to Stewie Griffin). Deuce games have been tough on the Otters in recent outings. After starting the season 5–3 in such sets, the Otters have dropped their last five, including Saturday's fifth–set heart–breaker.

ANOTHER DOUBLE–DOUBLE… After leading the team with a career–high 10 double–doubles as a sophomore in 2018, Jenna Tobin posted her team–leading fifth double–double of 2019 Saturday night by pacing the Otters with 15 kills and 15 digs.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… After playing their first two home matches of the season this weekend, the Otters get right back on the road next week, beginning a 3–match trip at Sonoma State Wednesday (Oct. 2). First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
