Otters Rally But Sonoma Holds On To Win In Four

Solid play not enough in 25–14, 25–23, 19–25, 25–23 setback

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay shook off a slow start but couldn't quite complete the comeback in a 25–14, 25–23, 19–25, 25–23 loss at Sonoma State Wednesday night in The Wolves Den.

The Otters played well for the most part, hitting .244 and compiling 10 total team blocks. Freshman middle blocker Mollin Helfrich (Pinole/Salesian Prep) led the attackers with 12 kills against two errors for a .476 attack percentage. Senior opposite Payton Trimm (Mt. Whitney HS) saw her most extensive action of the season and blocked a career–high four balls.

The Otters fell behind big in the first set and trailed 10–3 in the second when they finally found their footing. CSUMB out–scored Sonoma 68–59 over the balance of the match, but the Seawolves were able to win the key points in the second and fourth sets to close out the win.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… a Tate Battistini kill in transition on match point officially ended the affair.

TOBIN JUST MISSES DOUBLE–DOUBLE… Junior outside hitter Jenna Tobin just missed her sixth double–double of the season, finishing with nine kills and 15 digs.

WHAT THE DEUCE… (with apologies to Stewie Griffin). Deuce games have been tough on the Otters in recent outings. After starting the season 5–3 in such sets, the Otters have dropped their last six, including Wednesday's second set near comeback at Sonoma.

A TASTE OF THEIR OWN MEDICINE… CSUMB is usually one of the toughest serving teams in the CCAA. Wednesday at Sonoma, the Otters got a taste of their own medicine, suffering 12 Seawolves aces in the 4–set match. By comparison, CSUMB's season high for aces is 13 in a sweep of Seattle Pacific on  Sept. 12.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… KILLS: Mollin Helfrich 12; BLOCKS: Hannah Haveman/Mollin Helfrich/Payton Trimm 4; ACES: Kaylie Honberger/Jenna Tobin 2; ASSISTS: Sophia Torres 34; DIGS: Sam Chavez 21.

THE LAST WORD… "Aside from the first set, we really played our way. We are so close and I'm so proud of this team and their commitment to getting better one match at a time." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 3–match roadtrip by heading to America's Finest City for a pair of matches Friday and Saturday. They'll play at NCAA Division I bound UC San Diego Friday and at Cal State San Marcos Saturday. Links for live stats and video from both matches may be found at OtterAthletics.com.
