Another Late Rally Falls Short In Loss At UCSD

Otters fall in four sets to NCAA Division I bound Tritons

LA JOLLA, Calif. — In what might have been the last meeting for the foreseeable future between Cal State Monterey Bay and UC San Diego on the volleyball court, at late Otter rally wasn't enough to stop the host Tritons from taking a 25–18, 25–13, 22–25, 25–18 win Friday night in RIMAC Arena.

UCSD is leaving the CCAA for the Big West Conference next season and Friday's match was the only scheduled meeting between the teams this season. It is unlikely the teams will schedule each other starting next season.

Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) and Baylie Pierson (Vista Murietta HS) led a balanced Otter offense with nine kills apiece. Freshman Lauren Reeves (Atascadero/Templeton HS) came off the bench to add a season–high seven kills.

UCSD pulled away early to take the first two sets. The third set became a barn–burner as the teams played through 15 ties and six lead changes before a pair of Aly Fullbright (Huntington Beach/Edison HS) served a pair of aces to lead a late Otter surge.

CSUMB had one more comeback in the fourth set. Trailing 17–6, the Otters rallied to within 21–17 before UCSD stemmed the tied to hold on for the win.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Sydney Tekstra's kill spoiled a late run that had pulled the Otters to within 21–17 in the fourth set.

GALLOWAY ON THE VENTURA HIGHWAY… Senior outside hitter Kyra Galloway served her 66th career ace to tie Lacee Ventura (2010–13) for No. 11 on the Otter career aces list. She needs 10 more to catch Katie Bos (2006–09) for a spot in the Top 10.

FOLLOWING IN HER FOOTSTEPS… Freshman libero Madi Lombardi (Carmel HS) enjoyed her return to La Jolla, where her older sister Brittany was an all–region libero for the Tritons. Madi led all back row players with 18 digs Friday night.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… KILLS: Baylie Pierson/Jenna Tobin 9; POINTS: Jenna Tobin 11; BLOCKS: Mollin Helfrich 2; ACES: Aly Fullbright 4; ASSISTS: Sophia Torres 19; DIGS: Madi Lombardi 18.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 3–match roadtrip with a matinee Saturday at Cal State San Marcos. First serve is scheduled for 3 p.m. Links for live stats and video from both matches may be found at OtterAthletics.com.
