CSUMB hits season–best .354 in 25–16, 25–17, 25–17 win over Dominguez Hills

BOX SCORE SEASIDE, Calif. — After spending the first month of the season on the road, the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball enjoyed some 5–star home cooking Friday night in a 25–16, 25–17, 25–17 sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills in The Kelp Bed.

The Otters hit a sizzling .354 as a team, the seventh–highest attack percentage in school history and the fifth–highest against NCAA competition. Freshman middle blocker Mollin Helfrich (Pinole/Salesian Prep) led the way by hitting .714 with 11 kills and one error in 14 swings. Fellow middle Hannah Haveman (Parker, Colo./Legend HS) hit .545 with six kills and no errors.

CSUMB controlled this match from the outset. The Otters never trailed in the first and third sets and trailed only briefly in set two, taking the lead for good at 4–3.

In addition to their efficient attacking, the Otters won the battles of the front line (5–2 blocks) and the back line (48–38 digs). Add to that five different players contributing to their six service aces and the Otter sweep was complete.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… a Jenna Tobin kill erased a 2–1 Toro lead in the second set. It proved to be the first and last time Dominguez Hills would hold a lead in the match.

FOR (HOME) OPENERS… The Otters improved to 8–13 all–time in home openers dating back to the 1996 season.

START ME UP… Freshman setter Aly Fullbright (Huntington Beach/Edison HS) made her first collegiate start a memorable one. She passed 37 assists, the 14th best 3–set performance in Otter history and the second–most ever by an Otter freshman. Monique Sena set the Otter freshman mark for assists in a 3–setter with 41 in a win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Oct. 30, 2009.

GALLOWAY SERVES IT UP TO No. 15… Senior outside hitter Kyra Galloway served the 61st ace of her career to tie Kendra Miller (2004–07) for No. 15 on the CSUMB careers aces list.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Mollin Helfrich 12.5; KILLS: Mollin Helfrich 11; BLOCKS: Mollin Helfrich 3; ACES: Kaylie Honberger 2; DIGS: Jenna Tobin 13.

THE LAST WORD… "It felt good to be home. Really proud of the commitment from this team all week. They put in so much work to get better on the little things and it paid off tonight. We have a lot of season left and I'm excited to see where we can go." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their brief 2–match homestand by hosting Cal State L.A. Saturday (Sept. 28) for a 7 p.m. first serve.
