Record Setting Night For Freshman Chavez At Stanislaus

Sam Chavez sets digs record as Otters fall to Warriors in four sets

TURLOCK, Calif. — Stanislaus State used a big rally late in the fourth set to upend visiting Cal State Monterey Bay 21–25, 27–25, 25–22, 26–24 Saturday night in Fitzpatrick Arena.

The Otters appeared to be in control and ready to send it to a decisive fifth set. But Stanislaus caught fire late, erasing a 21–12 CSUMB lead to rebound for the victory.

The result spoiled a big match from freshman libero Sam Chavez (Sacramento/Saint Francis HS), who tied the Otter record for digs in a 4–set match (35) while making just her second collegiate start.

Fellow freshman Mollin Helfrich (Pinole/Salesian Prep) continued the hot start to her rookie campaign by hitting a team–high .290 with 13 kills and five blocks. Junior hitters Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) and Baylie Pierson (Vista Murietta HS) added 16 and 13 kills respectively.
 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN…the Warriors earned two kills in transition to complete a 14–3 run to end the fourth set and the match..

CHAVEZ DIGS IT… Sam Chavez tied the school record for digs in a 4–set match with 35 Saturday at Stanislaus State. It equals the mark first reached by Jennifer Holda against Cal State East Bay on Sept. 21, 2005. It was just one off the all–time record of 36 digs set by Brittany Etchings in a 5–set win at Humboldt State on Oct. 7, 2006.

PUT AN ASTERISK BY THOSE RECORDS… Note that both Jennifer Holda's and Brittany Etching's records were accomplished when sets were scored to 30 points, instead of 25 points as the have been since 2008.

THE OTTERS DIG IT, TOO… Led by Sam Chavez, the Otters totalled 99 digs Saturday night at Stanislaus State. That mark ranks No. 2 on the CSUMB list for a 4–set match, trailing only the 103 digs they posted in a win over Humboldt State on Sept. 17, 2011.

OTTERS ON THE BLOCKS… The Otters put down 12.0 team blocks Saturday at Stanislaus State. That ties for No. 2 on the CSUMB list for blocks in a 4–set match. The record of 13.0 blocks came at Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 24, 2011. That Otters also blocked 12.0 balls against Chaminade just last week (Sept. 14).

TOP 20 TOBIN… Jenna Tobin recorded 17.0 points with 16 kills and one solo block Saturday at Stanislaus, bringing her career total to 457.0 That moves her past DJ Gresham-Ryder (449.0 from 2013–15) into 20th place on the Otter career points list.
