Otters Finish Play At West Region Showcase With Loss

CSUMB falls to 2018 NCAA qualifier Chaminade in four sets

POMONA, Calif. — A strong effort in the second set wasn't enough to carry Cal State Monterey Bay over 2018 NCAA Tournament qualifier Chaminade University as the Otters fell 25–20, 28–30, 25–17, 25–16 Saturday in the final match of the West Region Showcase at Kellogg Arena.

The Otters saved four consecutive set points in a marathon second set to level the match, but struggled sustaining point runs in the final two frames as the Silverswords pulled away for the win.

Junior Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) finished a strong performance at the Showcase with team–highs of 14 kills and 14 digs Saturday versus Chaminade. Junior opposite Baylie Pierson (Vista Murietta HS) added nine kills and four blocks. Freshman middle blocker Mollin Helfrich (Salesian Prep) led all net defenders with five blocks.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… an Annah Rivera kill capped a 5–point Silversword run that broke a 12–12 tie in the fourth set. The Otters never drew closer than four points the rest of the way.

ALL–TOURNAMENT TEAM… Junior outside hitter Jenna Tobin earned one of four spots on the West Region Showcase All–Tournament team. She finished the weekend with 58 kills (4.14 kps). She also totaled 46 digs (3.28 dps) and six service aces. Joining Tobin on the all–tournament team with Maddie Batiste of Seattle Pacific and Western Washington's Kayleigh Harper and Calleigh Heilborn.

ANOTHER DOUBLE–DOUBLE… With 14 kills and 14 digs Saturday versus Chaminade, Jenna Tobin recorded her third double–double of 2019. Tobin led the Otters with 10 double–doubles as an All–CCAA pick in 2018.

ON THE BLOCKS… Led by five stuffs from freshman Mollin Helfrich, the Otters totaled 12.0 team blocks Saturday versus Chaminade. That mark ranks No. 2 all–time for blocks in a 4–set match. The Otters set the record of 13.0 blocks at Cal Poly Pomona on Sept. 24, 2011.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jenna Tobin 15.5; KILLS: Jenna Tobin 14; BLOCKS: Mollin Helfrich 5; ACES: Five Otters 1; DIGS: Jenna Tobin 14.

THE LAST WORD… "We got out worked. Losing is one thing, but to lose by being out worked is never acceptable in this program. We have to be better moving forward and we will be. Both of our loses this weekend were to top teams in our region and we learned a lot from playing some of the best. I'm confident we will respond this week in a big way. " — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters begin CCAA play with a 3–match trip north. The action begins Wednesday (Sept. 18) at Humboldt State. Links for live stats and video will be available on OtterAthletics.com.
