Tobin, Torres Net Records As Otters Down Vulcans

Jenna Tobin records 27 kills, Sophia Torres 56 assists in 4–set victory

POMONA, Calif. — Backed by record–setting performances from Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) and Sophia Torres Temecula/Chaparral HS), Cal State Monterey Bay took a 25–14, 26–28, 25–21, 25–23 decision from Hawaii–Hilo Friday afternoon on Day 2 of the West Region Showcase at Cal Poly Pomona's Kellogg Arena.

Tobin tied Jessica Malcolm's record of 27 kills in a 4–set established in 2013. Torres equaled Kelsey Johnston's record of 56 assists in a 4–set match that also came during the 2013 season.
The numbers marked career highs for both Tobin and Torres.

CSUMB (4–2 overall) rolled in the first set before playing through 21 ties and 11 lead changes in the second set alone. The Otters led for much of the third and fourth sets, both times holding off late Vulcan rallies to secure the wins.

Freshman Madi Lombardi (Carmel HS) led the Otter backline with 17 digs. Tobin added 15 digs and shared team–high honors with Hannah Haveman (Parker, Colo./Legend HS) with three blocks.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Successive kills by Kaylie Honberger and Jenna Tobin snapped a 23–23 tie in the fourth set.

CAN YOU DOUBLE–DIGIT DIG IT? Freshman Madi Lombardi collected a team–high 17 digs in Friday's win over Hawaii–Hilo. She has reached double digits in all six of her appearances and is averaging a healthy 4.32 digs per set.

DOUBLE DOUBLE–DOUBLES… With 27 kills and 15 digs in Friday's win over Hawaii–Hilo, Jenna Tobin recorded her second double–double of 2019. Tobin led the Otters with 10 double–doubles as an All–CCAA pick in 2018.

TEAM RECORD WATCH… Led by Jenna Tobin (27 kills) and Sophia Torres (56 assists), the Otters did a couple of adjustments to the team record book in Friday's win over Hawaii–Hilo. CSUMB's 63 kills rank No. 6 for kills in a 4–set match and its 61 assists rank No. 3. Both records (70 kills, 63 assists) came in a win over Humboldt State on Sept. 22, 2007.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jenna Tobin 29.5; KILLS: Jenna Tobin 27; BLOCKS: Hannah Haveman/Jenna Tobin 3; ACES: Alexa Blunt/Kaylie Honberger 2; DIGS: Madi Lombardi 17.

THE LAST WORD… "I was really proud of the composure from our young team today. Hilo played really well and we did a good job adjusting and continuing to play our way late in the match. We still need be better in the middle of the match, but we have another opportunity tomorrow night." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude play at the West Region Showcase with a match against 2018 NCAA qualifier Chaminade University Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
