Big Inning Lifts Cal Poly Over Otters In NCAA Opener

CSUMB falls 11–6, will meet Azusa Pacific Friday at noon

AZUSA, Calif. — No. 5 seed Cal Poly Pomona used a 6–run sixth inning to slip past No. 4 seed Cal State Monterey Bay 11–6 in the opening game of the NCAA Division II Baseball West Regional at Azusa Pacific's Cougar Baseball Complex Thursday evening.

The loss leaves CSUMB (35–22) with a Friday afternoon meeting against top seed and host Azusa Pacific. A win there would put the Otters into Saturday's championship round while a loss would leave Pomona and APU to play for the title.

Pomona jumped to an early 4–0 lead. The Otters pulled to within a run in the fifth inning thanks to Hunter Harris' (Newark Memorial HS/Chabot College) first home run and a run–scoring single from TJ Dove (Yuba CC).

But the Broncos responded by tagging a pair of Otter relievers for six runs in the top of the sixth inning to put the game out of reach. Patrick Flynn's 3–run homer capped the explosion.

Brian Morley (Carmichael/Jesuit HS) added RBI singles in the seventh an ninth innings to help account for the final score.

Kyle Dean (Rancho Bernardo HS) went 4–for–5 with a pair of doubles to lead the 11–hit Otter offense. He raised his hitting streak to a team season–high 19 games Thursday.

Dove and Morley added two hits and two RBI apiece.

Junior Greg Steinbeck (San Benito HS) allowed four runs in five innings to pick up his first loss of the season. He is now 6–1 overall.
