Otter Season Ends With 4–3 NCAA Regional Loss

No. 6 Azusa Pacific breaks a 3–3 tie with late home run; Otters finish 35–23

AZUSA, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay baseball saw its season come to an end with a hard–fought 4–3 loss at No. 6 Azusa Pacific University on Day 2 of the NCAA Baseball West Regional Tournament Friday at the Cougar Baseball Complex.

CSUMB ends its season at 35–23 overall. Azusa Pacific improved to 37–13 and will play a best 2–of–3 against Cal Poly Pomona for the right to advance to the West Super Regional.

Despite the 1–run setback, the Otters finished a strong season in which they posted the third most wins (35) in school history. CSUMB has won 84 games over the past two seasons, the most successful 2–year run in program history.

Azusa jumped to a 1–0 lead in the first inning, but the Otters battled back to take the lead on a third inning homer by Kokko Figueiredo (Fortuna HS/College of the Redwoods) and an fifth inning RBI single by Brian Morley (Carmichael/Jesuit HS).

APU retook the lead in its half of the fifth on a 2–run homer by Cole Klescz, but the Otters tied it right back up in their next at bats on a Reed Oster (Napa HS) sacrifice fly.

That's where the game stood until No. 9 hitter Casey Dykstra hit a 2–out, solo home run in the seventh to account for the final margin.

Figueiredo finished the day 2–for–5 to lead the Otter offense. TJ Dove (Yuba CC) hit his second double of the regional and scored a run in his final collegiate game.
