McRae, Dove Shine As Otters Reach Championship Saturday

Ethan McRae fans 12 in seven innings, TJ Dove homers twice in Friday split

STOCKTON, Calif. — No. 21 Cal State Monterey Bay split a pair of 1–run games at the CCAA Tournament to earn a trip to Championship Saturday at Banner Island Ballpark. CSUMB dropped a heart–breaking 1–0, 11–inning decision to Cal Poly Pomona in Friday's early game before rallying to eliminate San Francisco State 9–8 in the finale.

The Otters will meet Pomona at noon Saturday. If CSUMB wins that game, a second will be played to determined the CCAA Tournament champion. If Pomona, wins the first game, it will be the champion.

"That was a long day of baseball," said CSUMB Head Coach Walt White. "But we're going to play for the first tournament championship in program history on Saturday, and that's pretty cool."

Senior center fielder TJ Dove (Yuba CC) powered the Otters to the win over San Francisco State with a pair of home runs, a double and five RBI. Senior catcher Mason Allen (Roseville/Menlo College) added a 2–run shot of his own before Brian Morley (Carmichael/Jesuit HS) delivered a 2–out, RBI single to plate Dove and break an 8–8 tie in the ninth inning.

Junior Parker Fokken (Menifee/Chaffey College) retired the final three batters to earn his fifth save. Senior Kale Leach (Folsom Lake College) fanned seven in 5 2/3 innings of relief to earn the win.

The win over SFSU helped erase the bitter taste of a loss to Pomona in an epic pitcher's duel to begin the day. Junior Ethan McRae (Fresno CC) struck out a career–high 12 in just seven innings of 3–hit pitching to begin the game. But Pomona starter Drew Atherton was just as effective, allowing just four Otter hits over eight innings.

Austin Wahl (Palma HS) threw four strong innings in relief of McRae, but for his first pitch in the 11th inning. Bronco center fielder Nick Peifer hit a high, curling ball down the left field line that required an umpire's conference before officially being adjudged fair and a home run. It proved to be the only run of the game.
