CSUMB Splits On CCAA Championship Saturday

Otters will await NCAA Regional selection Sunday evening to learn postseason fate

STOCKTON, Calif. — No. 21 Cal State Monterey Bay forced a winner–take–all championship game but came up just short as Cal Poly Pomona earned a split and the CCAA Championship Tournament title Saturday at Banner Island Ballpark.

CSUMB (35–21) is all but assured of an at–large berth to the NCAA West Regional while Pomona (29–26) needed to win the CCAA Tournament to earn a the conference's automatic bid. The Broncos threw everything they had at the Otters, and it proved to be just enough.

The Otters, coming off consecutive nights playing past 11 p.m. then having to play the following morning, scrapped their way to an impressive win in the opener. Senior Jeffery Ahern (Anderson HS) pitched strong in a spot start, allowing just one run while striking out six to earn the win and improve to 7–0.

Junior Michael Scolaro (L.A. Pierce College) was every bit as impressive as Ahern in relief. Scolaro allowed just three hits in 3 2/3 innings. He pitched to the final batter when, with a 3–2 count on Bronco center fielder Brennan McKenzie, a calf strain flared up and forced Scolaro from the game. Sean McClure (Norco HS/Chaffey College) made one pitch, coaxing McKenzie to ground out to short, to take the save.

The finale showcased another strong relief appearance as junior Jacob Ahid (Hilmar HS) was stellar in his longest stint as an Otter. Ahid threw 5 1/3 innings of shutout ball to keep the Otters in the game until time ran out in the ninth.

Second baseman Kyle Czaplak (Pacific Grove HS) drove in a pair of runs, designated hitter Kokko Figueiredo (Fortuna HS/College of the Redwoods) had three hits and Kyle Dean (Rancho Bernardo HS) extended his hitting streak to 17 games with an eighth inning single. None of that was enough, however, to overcome a 4–run Pomona fourth that broke a 2–2 tie.

The Otters were well represented on the All–CCAA Tournament team. Center fielder TJ Dove (Yuba CC) led an Otter all–tourney quartet that included Ethan McRae (Fresno CC), Brian Morley (Carmichael/Jesuit HS) and Czaplak.

CSUMB, which began the week as the No. 4 seed will await the announcement of the NCAA West Regional pairings to be revealed Sunday at 7 p.m. (Pacific) on NCAA.com. The top six teams in the final regional rankings will advance to the NCAA Tournament.
