Otter Comeback Falls Just Short In 7–5 Loss At CSUSB

Otters load the bases in the ninth when comeback ends

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Cal State Monterey couldn't finish off its comeback attempt, leaving the bases loaded in the ninth inning as Cal State San Bernardino hung on for a 7–5 win Friday night at Fiscallini Field.

CSUMB yielded four runs in the first inning and trailed 7–2 after four. But a 2–run single by Connor Caspersen (Amador Valley HS/Mission College) highlighted a 3–run seventh that got the Otters back into the game.

Four innings of combined shutout relief by Sean McClure (Norco HS/Chaffey College) and Austin Wahl (Palma HS) allowed the Otters one final chance in the ninth. They loaded the bases with one out and had consecutive batters jump ahead to 3–1 counts. But Coyote reliever Jackson Gilmore worked all the way back to strike out both batters looking to end the game.

Caspersen led the Otter offense with two hits and a career–high four RBI. Kyle Dean (Rancho Bernardo HS) and Nick Sheehan (Bullard HS/Fresno CC) each doubled for CSUMB.

The Otters will continue their 4–games series versus San Bernardino with a doubleheader Saturday at Fiscallini Field.
