Otters Clinch 30–Win Season With Sweep At San Bern

CSUMB wins 7–2, 7–5 and improves to 30–19 overall

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay clinched its second consecutive 30–win season with a doubleheader sweep of Cal State San Bernardino, 7–2 and 7–5, Saturday at Fiscalini Field.

The wins lifts CSUMB to 30–19 overall and 28–15 in CCAA play. They also keep the Otters alive in the race for the CCAA title and move them to within a game of clinching no worse than second place.

Greg Steinbeck (San Benito HS) continued his impressive junior season by going the distance in the opener. The only blemish on his 5–hit, 5–strikeout gem were a pair of unearned runs in the first inning.

Senior Jeffery Ahern (Anderson HS) had a rare tough outing in the nightcap, allowing three runs in two innings. Nevertheless, he improved to 5–0 when the Otters scored three time in the seventh inning to retake the lead.

Offensively, CSUMB got contributions from up and down the lineup. Kokko Figueiredo (Fortuna HS/College of the Redwoods) led the way in Game 1 with three hits, including his second home run of the season.

Game 2 saw TJ Dove (Yuba CC) and Reed Oster (Napa HS) hit back–to–back jacks in the third inning to overcome and early 2–0 deficit. San Bernardino rallied to take a 5–4 lead into the seventh and final inning, where Brian Morley (Carmichael/Jesuit HS) doubled in the tying run before scoring the game–winner on a bases loaded walk drawn by Figueiredo.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Reed Oster doubled home Brian Morley to break a 2–2 tie in the fifth inning. Greg Steinbeck allowed just two hits over the final 8 1/3 innings to remove all doubt from the outcome.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Parker Fokken fanned Colton Combs representing the potential tying run to end the game.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… Saturday's sweep of the Seawolves was CSUMB's eighth twin killing of 2019.

THE 30–30 CLUB… The Otters have won 30 games for two consecutive seasons (including a school–record 39 in 2018). It marks CSUMB's fifth 30–win season since 2013.

REGULAR SEASON FINALES… Of course, the Otters are guaranteed a spot in the postseason, but tomorrow will mark the final regular season game for CSUMB. The Otters are 6–2 in regular season finales under Head Coach Walt White.

OTHER CONTENDERS HAVE WORK TO DO… Although the Otters will be off next week, each of the other CCAA Tournament contenders, with the exception of Cal Poly Pomona, will be playing next week.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Greg Steinbeck (W [6–0], CG, 0 ER, 5 H, 5 K BB); Parker Fokken (Sv [3], 1.0 IP, H, K); TJ Dove (4x10, HR [2], 3 R, RBI); Kokko Figueiredo (3x7, HR [2], BB, 2 R, 3 RBI); Reed Oster (2x7, 2B, HR [1], 2 R, 2 RBI); Kyle Dean (3x7, 2B, 2 BB, R, 2 RBI).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their regular season with a single game Sunday at San Bernardino. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
