Otters Punch Ticket to Postseason With 5–4 Win At SFSU

Otters headed to to the CCAA Championship Tournament for the fifth consecutive season

SAN FRANCISCO — Cal State Monterey Bay punched its ticket to the CCAA Championship Tournament by completing a series win at San Francisco State with a 5–4 victory Saturday at Maloney Field.

The win lifts CSUMB to 28–18 overall and 26–14 in CCAA play. The win—combined with Cal Poly Pomona's 4–1 loss at Chico State Saturday—guarantees the Otters a place in the 6–team CCAA Tournament field. It will mark CSUMB's fifth consecutive trip to the postseason.

The Otters had to battle to earn Saturday's win, overcoming an early deficit than riding three scoreless innings of relief from junior Parker Fokken (Paloma Valley HS/Chaffey College) to hold off a late Gator rally.

RBI singles by Kyle Czaplak (Pacific Grove HS) and Reed Oster (Napa HS) gave the Otters a 2–1 lead in the fourth. RBI doubles by Czaplak and TJ Dove (Yuba CC) sandwiched a run–scoring base hit by Kokko Figueiredo (Fortuna HS/College of the Redwoods) to extend the Otter lead to 5–1 an inning later.

Junior Ethan McRae (Fresno CC) fanned nine and allowed just two runs in six strong innings to earn his fifth win of the season. Fokken struck out two and allowed just two hits to earn his second save.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… After a 2–out error allowed the Gators to put the potential tying and winning runs in scoring position, Parker Fokken got SFSU's No. 3 hitter, Collin Gable, swinging to end the game.

CLOSING IN ON 30 WINS… Prior to Walt White's arrival at CSUMB for the 2011 season, CSUMB had never won more than 17 games in a season. In fact, it averaged a shade under 14 wins a year. Saturday's win at San Francisco State puts the Otters within two victories of 30 for the second consecutive season and the fifth time in eight–plus years under White.

CLOSER BY COMMITTEE II… The CSUMB bullpen earned its 12th save of 2019 Saturday at San Francisco State. That is tied for No. 3 on the Otter list for team saves in one season. The Otters set the school record of 19 saves in 2018.

CLOSER BY COMMITTEE II… After Connor Fabing tied the school individual record with 10 saves in 2018, the Otters have been going the "closer by committee" route in 2019. Of course, Fabing has joined the starting rotation for the stretch run, leaving six different relievers to amass 12 saves so far this season. By earning his second save Saturday, Parker Fokken became the fourth Otter reliever with multiple saves in 2019.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Ethan McRae (W [5–6], 6.0 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 9 K, BB); Parker Fokken (Sv [2], 3.0 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 2 K, 2 BB); TJ Dove (3x5, 2B, 2 R, 3 RBI); Kyle Czaplak (2x4, 2B, 2 RBI); Kokko Figueiredo (2x5, R, RBI).

THE LAST WORD… "Great team win today. To be able to win the series in that fashion was exciting and needed for our team. The CCAA is such a competitive conference, where every win is tough to come by and series wins are even more difficult. We have a lot of baseball to play over the next month and it only gets more challenging. Next week at San Bernardino will be another difficult road test." — CSUMB Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters close the regular season with a 4–game series at Cal State San Bernardino Apr. 26–28.
