Tough Luck On Senior Day As Sonoma Takes Finale

Otters strand 12 runners in 5–1 setback

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay couldn't find the big hits when it needed them while Sonoma State scored five unearned runs on just six hits to spoil Senior Day for the Otters, 5–1, Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB (25–17, 23–13 CCAA) knocked 10 hits—including four doubles—and collected 16 base runners Sunday. But the Otters stranded 12, despite going down in order in just one inning—the sixth.

It was the visiting Seawolves who took advantage of their limited scoring opportunities. Sonoma scored the game's first run without the benefit of a hit, parlaying a walk, a steal and throwing error, and a sac fly into a 1–0 lead in the fourth.

Sonoma broke the game open when a key Otter error opened the door to a 4–run sixth inning. That chased starter Ethan McRae (Fresno CC) even though he fanned seven and allowed just four hits through 5 2/3 innings.

The Otters broke through for what proved to be their only run on back–to–back doubles by Reed Oster (Napa HS) and Connor Caspersen (Pleasanton/Mission College) in the eighth.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Sonoma reliever Tyson Canfield retired the heart of the Otter batting order to strand two runners in the seventh inning.

THAT'S A WRAP, HOME FIELD EDITION… Barring unforeseen schedule changes, Sunday's game put a lid on the 2019 Otter Baseball home schedule. CSUMB finishes the season 14–12 at home.

THE DIRTY DOZEN…  By stranding 12 runners Sunday, the Otters left double figure runners on base for the 12th time this season. Oddly enough, the Otters are a very respectable 7–5 in those dozen games.

ROAD SWEET ROAD… The Otters are scheduled to close the regular season with eight consecutive road games. CSUMB is a healthy 11–5 away from home this season and is 18–7 in its last 25 regular season games away from the Otter Sports Complex.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Ethan McRae (L [4–6], 4 H, 0 ER, 7 K, BB); Kyle Dean (3x5); Connor Caspersen (2x4, 2B, RBI); Reed Oster (1x4, 2B, R); Kokko Figueiredo (1x4, 2B, BB); Nick Sheehan (1x4, 2B).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to The City to take on San Francisco State in a key 4–game series Apr. 18–20. Note that this is a Thursday–Saturday series (instead of the usual Friday–Sunday schedule) due to the East holiday on Apr. 21.
