Otters Win Slugfest To Open Key Series At S.F. State

Brian Morley homers, Daniel Harris goes six strong in 11–8 victory

SAN FRANCISCO — Visiting Cal State Monterey Bay raced to an early lead then held on to open a big series at San Francisco State with an 11–8 win Friday at Maloney Field.

With the win, CSUMB (26–17, 24–13 CCAA) jumps ahead of San Francisco State (20–10, 18–10) into sole possession of second place in the CCAA standings. The Otters have seven games remaining in the regular season while the Gators have 11 left.

CSUMB took advantage of some sloppy Gator defense to open a 6–1 lead after three innings. An Otter error in the fourth gifted those runs back as SFSU eventually closed to within 9–8 in the seventh.

The Otters finally got the breathing room they needed thanks to a pair of hustle plays in the eighth inning. After TJ Dove (Yuba CC)  singled in a run, Kokko Figueiredo (Fortuna HS) barely beat out what looked like a sure inning–ending, double play grounder to keep the inning alive.

With two outs and runners on the corners, Kyle Dean (Rancho Bernardo HS) raced down the line to beat out an infield single to short, allowing Dove to score an insurance run.

Junior Daniel Harris (Capo Valley HS/Saddleback College) threw a strong six innings to earn his third win of the season. He allowed just two earned runs and six hits while striking out seven.

Fellow junior Sean McClure (Norco HS/Chaffey College) threw two perfect innings of relief to earn his third save.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Sean McClure took the mound with the Otters leading 11–8 in the bottom of the eighth inning. McClure need just 14 pitches to retire the Gators in order for the final six outs.

WINNING WAYS… With Friday's victory, the Otters guaranteed they will finish the 2019 regular season with a winning record for the fifth consecutive season and the eighth time in 10 seasons under Head Coach Walt White.

MORLEY MAKES HIS MARK, PART I… Brian Morley went deep for the eighth time this season with a solo shot in Friday's win at S.F. State. That moves him into the No. 8 spot on the Otter single–season home run list.

MORLEY MAKES HIS MARK, PART II… Brian Morley drove in a pair of runs Friday, giving him 44 in 2019. That mark ranks No. 6 on the Otter single–season RBI list.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Daniel Harris (W [3–4], 6.0 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 7 K, 3 BB); Sean McClure (Sv [3], 2.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R,K, 0 BB); Brian Morley (2x4, HR [8], 2 R, 2 RBI); Kyle Dean (2x3, 2 BB, 3 R, 2 RBI, SB); Nick Sheehan (2x4, 1, 2 RBI, SB); Reed Oster (3x5, R, RBI).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters and Gators continue their 4–game series with a doubleheader Saturday at Maloney Field. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
