Otters Bounce Back To Sweep Twinbill From Seawolves

Kokko Figueiredo homers, Connor Fabing tosses a complete game in 9–8, 4–1 wins

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay bounced back from a series–opening loss Friday night to sweep a doubleheader from Sonoma State 9–8 and 4–1 Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex.

The Otters let a 7–0 lead slip away in Game 1 before rallying for a pair of runs in the eighth inning to earn the win. Junior righty Connor Fabing (San Benito HS) was in complete control of the nightcap, tossing a 3–hitter to win his second consecutive complete game.

The wins lift CSUMB (25–16, 23–12 CCAA) back into sole possession of second place in the CCAA race.

Game 1 looked like it would be a laugher when Reed Oster's (Napa HS) RBI double highlighted a 5–run first inning. Starting pitcher Greg Steinbeck (San Benito HS) sailed through the first 4 2/3 innings before Sonoma touched him for five runs to close to within 7–5.

Senior Jeffery Ahern (Anderson HS) appeared to be cruising to the save until center fielder TJ Dove (Yuba CC) lost a 2–out fly ball in the sun, leading to a 3–run Sonoma eighth. Dove redeemed himself by leading off the Otter eighth with a double before scoring the tying run on a Kokko Figueiredo (Fortuna HS/College of the Redwoods) single.

Brian Morley (Carmichael/Jesuit HS) drove home Figureiredo two batters later with a game–winning double.

Figueiredo hit his first Otter bomb, a 2–run shot, to start a 4–run Otter first in the nightcap. That was more than enough for Fabing, who faced just one batter over the minimum through six innings before yielding a run on a sac fly in the seventh.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Brian Morley doubled home Kokko Figueiredo from first base to put the Otters up 9–8 in the eighth. Jeffery Ahern needed just eight pitches to seal his fourth win of 2019 with a perfect ninth.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… With the potential tying run at the plate, Devin Orr started a slick 6–4–3 double play off the bat of Seawolf second baseman Joshua Media to end the game.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… Saturday's sweep of the Seawolves was CSUMB's seventh twin killing of 2019.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Kokko Figueiredo hit his first Otter home run in Saturday's nightcap. He is the 11th different Otter to homer in 2019. It's the first time 11 Otters have homered in one season since 2015. In case you're wondering, the Otters have never had 12 different players home in the same season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Connor Fabing (W [3–2], CG, 3 H, 1 R, 3 K, 2 BB); Kokko Figueiredo (4x9, 2B, HR [1], 2 R, 3 RBI); Brian Morley (3x6, 2B, BB, R, RBI); TJ Dove (3x9, 2B, 2 R, SB); Reed Oster (3x6, 2B, BB, R, RBI); Connor Caspersen (2x4, SB, 3 RBI); Robert Boisvert (1x3, 2B); Kyle Dean 2x7, SB, 2 R, RBI).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters and Seawolves conclude their 4–game series with a single game Sunday at noon.
