Otters Drop First Game Of Series With Sonoma State, 9–4

Five unearned runs the difference in series–opening setback

SEASIDE, Calif. — A couple of key Otter errors allowed visiting Sonoma State to overcome an early deficit and hand host Cal State Monterey Bay a 9–4 setback in the opening game of a 4–game series Friday night at the Otter Sports Complex.

Things started well for CSUMB, which jumped on top early thanks to a TJ Dove RBI triple in the first followed by a Brian Morley RBI double. But errors in consecutive innings hamstrung Otter starter Daniel Harris, who saw a 3–1 lead turn into a 5–3 hole thanks to a five unearned runs.

The Otters managed 11 hits and 15 baserunners, but never got closer than 6–4 the rest of the way.

The Seawolves iced the game with a 2–out, bases–loaded triple by Zach Guardino in the ninth inning.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Zach Guardino cleared the bases with a 2–out triple to center in the ninth inning, extending Sonoma's lead from 6–4 to 9–4.

LIGHT'S OUT… While nobody can deny the new lights at the Otter Sports Complex have been a positive for CSUMB baseball, the Otters are still looking for their first home win under artificial illumination (0–2). They are not scheduled to play a home night game again until next season.

KOKKO'S STREAK ENDS… Kokko Figueiredo saw his 15–game hitting streak end Friday with an 0–for–4 night.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–game series versus Sonoma State with a doubleheader starting Saturday at 2 p.m.
