McRae, Leach Combine To Blank Dominguez Hills 6–0

McRae’s gem leads Otters to sweep of Toros with 6–0 win In series finale

CARSON, Calif. — After Otter bats exploded for 32 runs in winning the first three games of its weekend series at Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State Monterey Bay rode an 8–inning gem from junior Ethan McRae (Fresno CC) to a 6–0 win in the series finale Sunday at Toro Field.

The shutout was the first of the season for the Otters, who improved to 21–13 overall and 19–9 in CCAA play.

McRae did the yeoman's work, allowing just four hits and two walks in eight scoreless innings. Senior Kale Leach (Franklin HS/Folsom Lake College) needed just nine pitches to complete the shutout with a perfect ninth inning.

Right fielder Kyle Dean (Rancho Bernardo HS/BYU) struck the big blow with a base–clearing double to highlight a 4–run Otter fifth inning, breaking a scoreless tie. First baseman Brian Morley (Carmichael/Jesuit HS) hit his sixth home run of 2019 in the eighth inning and then drew a bases–loaded hit-by-pitch in the ninth to close the Otter scoreline.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Kyle Dean ripped a 1–out double to right center to plate three and give the Otters a 4–0 lead in the fifth. With Ethan McRae dealing, that was more than enough to seal the win.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… The Otters posted their third series sweep of 2019 by finishing off Dominguez Hills Sunday afternoon. The scores of the first three games with 13–10, 10–5 and 9–2. CSUMB previously swept Cal State L.A. (Feb. 22–24) and Cal State East Bay (Mar. 15–17).

HOW SWEEP IT IS, PART II… For all of CSUMB's baseball success, this marks just the third time ever that the Otters have swept three 4–games series in the same season. The 2015 Otters swept four series (East Bay, San Bernardino, Stanislaus and Sonoma). The 2013 Otters swept three such series (Sonoma, Cal Poly Pomona and Stanislaus).

SAVING THE BEST FOR LAST, PART I… The Otters saved their best for when it's counted the most at Dominguez Hills this weekend. CSUMB combined to score 18 runs in the final three innings in sweeping the series.

SAVING THE BEST FOR LAST, PART II… CSUMB's late inning offense isn't just a recent trend. From the eighth inning on, the Otters are out–scoring their opponents 41–16, including a 14–0 edge this weekend at Dominguez Hills.

GIVE HIM A SILVER BAT… Junior right fielder Kyle Dean ran his streak of reaching base safely to a team season-high 25 games Sunday. Dean went 1–for–3 with a pair of walks. It's also worth noting that Kyle Czaplak ran his streak to 17 games with a hit and a walk. Czaplak's is the second-longest streak by an Otter in 2019.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Ethan McRae (W [4–4], 8.0 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 4 K, 2 BB); Brian Morley (1x3, HR [6], R, 2 RBI); Kyle Dean (1x3, 2B, 2 BB, 3 RBI); TJ Dove (2x5).

THE LAST WORD… "Taking four games on the road in the CCAA is difficult. It took a total team effort. We built innings with patient, stubborn at bats. When we had opportunities, we stepped up and delivered. We responded with big innings when Dominguez would make a push. Our pitching was good all weekend. Dominguez is a good offensive club and we were able to keep them limited for most of the weekend, today especially. There is a lot of season left and we have some challenging series ahead. We will try to build on what we did this weekend and prepare for a tough Cal Poly Pomona club next weekend." — CSUMB Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home to host perennial national power Cal Poly Pomona for a 4–game series Apr. 5–7.
