Big Hits Elude Otters As San Marcos Sweeps Twinbill

Cougars win 5–2, 9–1; Ethan McRae fans nine in just five innings of the opener

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay saw its 5–game winning streak come to an end Saturday as the Otters couldn't find the key hits they needed to prevent visiting Cal State San Marcos from sweeping a doubleheader, 5–2 and 9–1, at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB gave up multiple runs in the first inning of both games. On the flip side, they loaded the bases in the first inning of both games but couldn't push across runs in either instance.

An RBI double by Kyle Czaplak (Pacific Grove HS) and a run–scoring single from Kyle Dean (Rancho Bernardo HS) brought the Otters to within 4–2 in the fifth inning of Game 1. They brought the tying run to the plate again in the sixth inning in their final chance to get back into the game.

The nightcap started just like the opener. This time, San Marcos scored three in the first. The Otters loaded the bases once again—this time with nobody out—but couldn't break through.

The Cougars add four runs in the second and the result was all but complete.

Dean and Kokko Figueiredo (Fortuna HS/College of the Redwoods) each had three hits to lead the Otter offense. Ethan McRae (Fresno CC) took the loss in Game 1 but allowed just four hits and fanned a season–high nine in just five innings.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… The Otters twice brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning but couldn't break through.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… The Otters loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning but couldn't score with their four, five and six hitters at the plate. San Marcos responded with a 4–run second to essentially ice the game.

DEAN MAKES IT 20 STRAIGHT… Kyle Dean hit safely in both games Saturday to run his streak of reaching base safely to 20 games. It's the longest such streak this season by an Otter.

SOMETHING CROOKED THIS WAY GOES… The Otters scored two runs in the fifth inning of the opener to run their streak of games with a crooked number to 11. That streak ended when they scored just one run in the nightcap.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Ethan McRae (L [3–4], 4 H, 4 R, 9 K); Kokko Figueiredo (3x7, 2B, 2 R); Kyle Dean (3x6, RBI, SB); Kyle Czaplak (1x6, 2B, R, RBI).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game set with San Marcos by hosting a single game Sunday at 11 a.m.

GO OTTERS!
