Bullpen, Big Hit Help Otters Rally For Series Split

Bullpen throws six scoreless innings, Brian Morley's double drives in game–winner

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay's weekend–long search for a big hit finally paid off late Sunday afternoon when Brian Morley's (Carmichael/Jesuit HS) 2–out double in the seventh inning snapped a 3–3 tie, propelling the Otters to a 4–3 win over Cal State San Marcos at the Otter Sports Complex.

All weekend the Otters put runners in scoring position only to miss the final hit needed to break through. Even Sunday's first two runs came courtesy of a Cougar throwing error. With the game and the series on the line in the seventh inning, however, the Otters came up with four clutch plate appearances.

Kyle Czaplak (Pacific Grove HS) doubled with one out and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Kyle Dean (Rancho Bernardo HS) worked back from a 1–2 count to draw a walk before stealing second.

TJ Dove (Yuba CC) cashed in the firsr runner by flying out to deep right, scoring Czaplak to tie the game. Morley followed by sneaking a 2–2 offering just inside the bag at third to plate Dean with what proved to be the winning run.

Senior reliever Kale Leach (Elk Grove/Folsom Lake College) took things from there, throwing two innings of 1–hit relief to earn his third save.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Kale Leach coaxed a flyout to right field from San Marcos cleanup hitter Andrew Garcia for the final out.

DEAN MAKES IT 21 STRAIGHT… Kyle Dean went 1–for–2 with a pair of walks to run his streak of reaching base safely to 21 games. It's the longest such streak this season by an Otter.

BULLISH ON THE PEN… The Otter bullpen took care of business Sunday afternoon. Inheriting a 3–0 deficit after three innings, Jeffery Ahern, Michael Scolaro and Kale Leach combined to throw six innings of 3–hit, shutout relief. Scolaro need just two pitches to record two outs and earn his first win. He got Andrew Garcia to hit into a 5–4–3 double play to end the seventh.

GOING AGAINST THE GRAIN… Brian Morley's clutch, 2–out double to drive home Sunday's game winner snapped the Otters out of a terrible offensive funk. Prior to his big hit, the Otters had been 4–for–29 (.138) with runners in scoring position this weekend

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Michael Scolaro (W [1–0], 0.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R); Kale Leach (Sv [3], 2.0 IP, 0 R, H, 2 BB); Brian Morley (3x4, 2B, GWRBI); Kyle Czaplak (1x3, 2B, R, BB, SB); Kyle Dean (1x2, R, 2 BB, SB); Reed Oster (2x4).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to the South Bay area of Los Angeles to face Cal State Dominguez Hills in a 4–game series Mar. 29–31.
