Otters Run Win Streak To Five With Series Opening Win

Kyle Guerra hits his first collegiate home run in 12–7 win over San Marcos

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay ran its winning streak to five games with a 12–7 win over Cal State San Marcos Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex. The Otters improved to 16–11 overall and 14–7 in the CCAA.

This game was over almost as soon as it started. CSUMB put up seven runs in the first inning then extended its lead to 10–0 with three more in the second. San Marcos scored three runs in the seventh and three more in the ninth to make the final cosmetically close.

Junior Greg Steinbeck (San Benito HS) threw six solid innings to get the win. He allowed just one run on four hits to improve to 4–0 on the season. He lowered his ERA to 2.52.

Senior TJ Dove (Yuba CC) enjoyed a big day at the plate with four hits and three runs scored. First baseman Brian Morley (Carmichael/Jesuit HS) added three hits of his own. Sophomore Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) had the big blast, hitting his first collegiate home run, a solo shot, in the seventh.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Kokko Figueiredo lined a double into the right field corner to make it 10–0 Otters in the second inning. San Marcos would never sniff the lead over the final seven innings.

HOW LOW CAN YOU GO… Greg Steinbeck lowered his ERA to 2.52 with his 6–inning performance Friday. That marks ranks No. 5 among the CCAA leaders this season (min. 25 IP). Otter teammate Daniel Harris ranks No. 3 on that list with an ERA of 1.95.

AN OTTER HIGH FIVE… The Otters ran their current winning streak to five games with Friday afternoon's victory. It is the second time this season the Otters have won at least five in a row. CSUMB won eight consecutive games from Feb. 17–Mar. 1. It marks the fifth time in program history that the Otters have posted two 5–game winning streaks in a single season.

ACTING A LITTLE BIT CROOKED… By starting Friday's 12–7 win over San Marcos with a 7–run first inning, the Otters ran their streak of putting a least one crooked number on the board to 10 consecutive games. For those unfamiliar with the term, putting a crooked number on the board means scoring two or more runs in a single inning (as opposed to a 0 or a 1).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Greg Steinbeck (W [4–0], 6.0 IP, 1 R, 4 H, K, BB); Kyle Guerra (1x4, HR [1], SF, R, 3 RBI); TJ Dove (4x5, 3 R, RBI); Brian Morley (3x4, 2 R, RBI); Kokko Figueiredo (1x3, 2B, R, RBI); Derrick Edwards (1x4, 2 R, 3 RBI).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–game series with Cal State San Marcos by playing a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
