Pitching Takes Center Stage As Otters Complete Sweep

After offense dominiates first three games, Otter arms lead to 4–3 win over East Bay

SEASIDE, Calif. — After offense dominated the first three games of the series, pitching took center stage for Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday as the Otters completed a 4–game sweep of Cal State East Bay with a 4–3 win at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB (15–11, 13–7 CCAA) scored all four of its runs in the second inning. Taking advantage of two Pioneer errors and a bases–loaded walk to Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) allowed the Otters to erase an early 1–0 deficit. A run scoring single by Kokko Figueiredo (Fortuna HS/College of the Redwoods) and a 2–run knock from Kyle Czaplak (Pacific Grove HS) gave Otter pitching all the run support it would need.

Jeffery Ahern (Anderson HS) allowed just one run in four innings to earn the victory on a day when the bullpen was scheduled to throw. Michael Scolaro (L.A. Pierce College) and Connor Fabing (San Benito HS) each allowed one run in two innings of work. Kale Leach (Franklin HS/Folsom Lake College) threw a scoreless ninth to earn his second save.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Kale Leach coaxed an game–ending ground ball from pinch hitter Joey Dice with the potential tying run on second base.

BATTLE OF THE BAYS… The weekend sweep by Otter baseball pulls the Otters to within four points of the Pioneers in the Battle of the Bays, 21–17. Fourteen more points are up for grabs, to be decided by water polo, men's and women's golf and track and field.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… The Otters posted their second series sweep of 2019 by finishing off East Bay Sunday afternoon. The scores of the first three games with 14–3, 9–2 and 7–4. CSUMB previously swept Cal State L.A. from Feb. 22–24.

HOW SWEEP IT IS, PART II… For all of CSUMB's baseball success, this marks just the third time ever that the Otters have swept two 4–games series in the same season. The 2015 Otters swept four series (East Bay, San Bernardino, Stanislaus and Sonoma). The 2013 Otters swept three such series (Sonoma, Cal Poly Pomona and Stanislaus).

SWEEPING ON THE FLIP SIDE… The Otters have been so consistent that they haven't been swept in a series since losing four to Cal State Dominguez Hills from Mar. 28–30, 2014. In fact, the Otters have been swept only three times in eight–plus seasons under head Coach Walt White.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Jeffery Ahern (W [1–0], 4.0 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 1K); Kale Leach (Sv [2], 1.0 IP, o R, 1 H); Kyle Czaplak (1x3, BB, 2 RBI); Kyle Guerra (1x3, BB, R, RBI)..

THE LAST WORD… "Being able to sweep a solid East Bay club is encouraging. We found ways to win games in a bunch of different ways. Today we really pitched well despite not being very offensive. We were solid defensively all weekend. When you pitch and play defense, you have a chance to win. We will get back to work this week and prepare for another challenge versus San Marcos." — CSUMB Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters welcome Cal State San Marcos for a 4–game series Mar. 22–24. The series opens with a single game Friday at 3 p.m.
