Otters Sweep Doubleheader, Clinch Series Win At East Bay

CSUMB wins 9–2 and 7–4 as series heads back to Seaside Sunday

HAYWARD, Calif. — Strong pitching, timely hitting and solid defense all came together for visiting Cal State Monterey Bay as the Otters swept a doubleheader at Cal State East Bay, 9–2 and 7–4 Saturday at the Pioneer Baseball Field.

Ethan McRae (Fresno CC) went six innings to win the opener with the help of three shutout innings of relief from Sean McClure (Norco HS/Chaffey College). Junior Parker Fokken (Paloma Valley HS/Chaffey College) went this distance in the nightcap as a pair of Brian Morley (Carmichael/Jesuit HS) home runs powered 14 hits of offensive support.

CSUMB pitching surrendered two runs in the first inning of Game 1. It was all Otter arms from that point, however, as they shutout the Pioneers over the next 14 innings.

For its part, the offense continued to click. Otter bats contributed 16 runs on 22 hits, giving the pitchers plenty of room to breathe.

Kyle Czaplak (Pacific Grove HS) and Kokko Figueiredo (Fortuna HS/College of the Redwoods) combined for five hits and four RBI in Saturday's opener. In addition to Morley's two home run game, Figueiredo went 4–for–4 with a double in the nightcap.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Reed Oster's sac fly capped a 3–run seventh that put the Otters on top 7–2.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Surprisingly, not until Parker Fokken coaxed a ground out from Ryan Thomasy to end the game. After CSUMB took a 7–0 lead into the bottom of the seventh, East Bay scored four times and Thomasy came to the plate representing the tying run.

POUNDING THE PIOS… There's no delicate way to say it: Otter bats have pounded Pioneer pitching through the first three games. The CSUMB offense has combined to score 30 runs and hit .356 with three doubles, two triples and three homers so far in the series.

DRIVING HIS POINT HOME… Brian Morley drove in four runs in Saturday's second game. It marks the third time this season he's driven in four (or  more runs in a game this season.

FOUR BY TWO… Kokko Figueiredo posted his second 4–hit game of the season by going 4–for–4 in Saturday's second game. He owns two of the three Otter 4–games in 2019 (Brian Morley owns the third).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Ethan McRae (W [3–3], 6.0 IP, 2 R, 7 H, 3 K, 3 BB); Parker Fokken (W [3–1], CG, 7.0 IP, 6 H, 3 ER, 4 K, BB); Brian Morley (2x7, 2 HR [5], 2 R, 4 RBI); Kokko Figueiredo (6x7, 2 2B, 5 R, 3 RBI); Kyle Czaplak (5x9, 3B, 3 R, 2 RBI).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game series with East Bay by hosting the Pioneers Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
