Otters Make It Eight Straight With Sweep At Chico

Offense continues to roll in 8–1, 13–6 victories

CHICO, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay rolled to its eighth consecutive win Friday night by sweeping a doubleheader from perennial contender Chico State, 8–1 and 13–6 at Nettleton Stadium.

CSUMB (10–6, 8–2 CCAA) got a brilliant effort on the mound from Daniel Harris (Capo Valley HS/Saddleback College) in the opener then batted around in two of the final three innings to erase 4–0 and 5–2 deficits to complete the sweep.

Harris allowed just one run and fanned six in eight strong innings to earn his second victory in Game 1. The Otters then received three innings of 2–hit, 4–strikeout relief from Austin Wahl (Palma HS/Cornell Univ.) and Jeffery Ahern (Anderson HS) in Game 2.

Junior Kyle Dean (Rancho Bernardo HS/BYU) swung the big stick for the Otters Friday, finishing the doubleheader 5–for–10 with a double, five runs and two RBI. Junior designated hitter Kokko Figueiredo (Fortuna HS/College of the Redwoods) also scored five runs in the twinbill, including four in the nightcap. He finished the day 4–for–9 with a double, five runs and an RBI.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Nick Sheehan singled in a pair to make it 5–0 Otters in the seventh. With Daniel Harris in control, Chico never threatened to take the lead.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Mason Allen hit a 2–run homer to left field to put the Otters on top 9–6 in the seventh (and final) inning. His first Otter home run opened the floodgates on 6–run explosion, sealing the win.

EIGHT ISN'T ENOUGH… The Otters ran their winning streak to eight games with Friday's sweep at Chico State. It's the fourth–longest streak in CSUMB Baseball history and the longest since they won nine in a row to open the 2016 season.

HOW TIMES HAVE CHANGED… After losing five in a row and 7–of–9 to Chico State from 2015–2017, the Otters have tamed the Wildcats in recent meetings. CSUMB has won six straight in the series and eight of the last nine dating back to May 6, 2017.

WE'RE WALKING, YES INDEED… After walking 12 times in their Feb. 24 win over Cal State L.A., the Otters walked 21 more times in Friday's doubleheader sweep of Chico State: 10 walks in the opener and 11 walks in the 7–inning nightcap.

OSTER MAKES IT 14 STRAIGHT… Senior third baseman Reed Oster hit safely in both games Friday—finishing the doubleheader 3–for–6—to run his streak of reaching base safely to 14 games. It's the longest streak of his career and the longest by an Otter this season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Daniel Harris (W [2–2], 8.0 IP, 1 R, 9 H, 6 K, 0 BB); Kyle Dean (5x10, 2B, 5 R, 2 RBI); Kokko Figueiredo (4x9, 2B, 5 R, RBI); Reed Oster (3x6, 2 R, 3 RBI); Mason Allen (2x5, HR [1], 2 R, 3 RBI).

THE LAST WORD… "A solid day for the Otters. Daniel Harris was exceptional in Game 1 and we had a grind mentality in Game 2. We didn't panic after going down early and we just continued to put pressure on them. Tomorrow and Sunday will be a challenge. Chico is a good team with a lot of fight in them. We look forward to the challenge." — CSUMB Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–game series at Chico State with a single game Saturday at 1 p.m. Note that is a change from the originally scheduled first pitch of noon.
