Otters Can’t Hang On To Late Lead As L.A. Rallies To Win

Chyna Dews scores 16 points, Camille Parker grabs 12 boards in 73–64 loss

LOS ANGELES — Cal State Monterey Bay gave one of its best road performances of the season, but it couldn't hang on late as Cal State L.A. rallied for a 73–64 women's basketball win Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles.

The Otters led by as many as 14 points late in the first half. They led by as many as nine late in the third quarter before the Golden Eagles made their run.

L.A. finally retook the lead for good at 52–51 early in the fourth, but couldn't put the game away until scoring its final 10 points from the line over the last 2:41 of regulation.

Freshman Chyna Dews (Venice HS) led the Otters with 16 points and five assists. Brianna Tucker (Clovis North HS) added 15 points while Camille Parker (Alta Loma HS) led all rebounders with 12 boards.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Madison Adams made the first of two free throws to make it 72–64 L.A. with 23 seconds remaining.

LENDING A HAND… The Otters passed a season–high 17 assists (on 22 field goals) Saturday at Cal State L.A. It's their most assists since passing 17 in a win over Academy of Art on Nov. 14, 2017.

PARKER NEARS TOP 25… With 12 rebounds Saturday (her fourth double–figure game of the season), Camille Parker moved to within two rebounds of a spot in the Otter Top 25 for most rebounds in a season with 149. She needs two to match Johanna Mahoney's 2003 season of 151 for 25th place. At her current pace, she will crack the Top 10 before season's end.

TOP 20 DEWS… With five assists Saturday, freshman Chyna Dews moved into the Top 20 on the Otter single season list with 68. She passed Stephanie Corgel (2013) and Stephanie Sack (2015)—both with 64—to move into 19th place. At her current pace, she will crack the Top 10 before season's end.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Chyna Dews 16; REBOUNDS: Camille Parker 12; ASSISTS: Chyna Dews 5; BLOCKS: None; STEALS: Camille Parker 4.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to The Kelp Bed for their final homestand of the 2018–19 season, beginning with a Thursday (Feb. 14) meeting with Sonoma State as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
