Williams Double–Double Not Enough In Loss At L.A.

Freshman Jared Williams records first double–double with 10 points, 11 rebounds

LOS ANGELES — Freshman forward Jared Williams (Eastvale/Roosevelt HS) posted his first collegiate double–double, but it wasn't enough to prevent Cal State L.A. from earning a 93–71 win Saturday in Los Angeles.

Williams finished with 10 points and a career–high 11 rebounds. Koen Sapwell (Adelaide, South Australia) added 17 points and five assists to lead four Otter scorers in double figures.

CSUMB led well into the first half. But L.A. finished the period on a 22–5 run to take a 48–36 lead into intermission. The Otters never pulled closer than eight points over the final 20 minutes.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Fard Muhammad grabbed a rebound from an Otter missed 3–point attempt with 4:11 remaining and L.A. up 82–65.

A DOUBLE–DOUBLE ANNIVERSARY… Saturday's 10–point, 11–rebound double–double by Jared Williams was not only the first of his collegiate career, it was the first by an Otter this season. The last Otter to record a double–double was Gregg Polosky, who scored 15 points and pulled down 14 boards against Cal State L.A. on Feb. 10, 2018.

JOHNSON NOW NO. 4 IN ASSISTS… With three assists Saturday afternoon, Jahvon Johnson passed Will Brown for No. 4 on the Otter career assist list with 185. At his current pace, he will become the fourth player in Otter history to reach 200 career assists by season's end.

SAPWELL BACK IN THE TOP 20… By making four 3–pointers Saturday at Cal State L.A., Koen Sapwell earned his second spot in the Otter Top 20 for treys in a single season. He now has 47 3–pointers, passing his own freshman season mark of 46 for No. 13 on the Otter list. He ranks No. 10 on the Otter career list with 93. At his current pace, he will tie Ryan Nitz for No. 7 on the Otter career list (104) by season's end.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Koen Sapwell 17; REBOUNDS: Jared Williams 11; ASSISTS: Koen Sapwell 5; BLOCKS: Tommy Kramer/J.R. Schilling 1; STEALS: Koen Sapwell/Charlie Tooley 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to The Kelp Bed for their final homestand of the 2018–19 season, beginning with a Thursday (Feb. 14) meeting with Sonoma State as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
