Cold Start Dooms Otters In 81–64 Loss To Sonoma

Jahvon Johnson leads CSUMB with 16 points, Jared Williams has nine rebounds

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay couldn't overcome several cold spells as Sonoma State rode a hot start to an 81–64 win over the Otters Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) led the Otters with 16 points while freshman Jared Williams (Eastvale/Roosevelt HS) just missed a double–double, finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds.

Normally pedestrian shooting Sonoma knocked down just about every open look it had through the first 27 minutes, going 8–for–16 from 3–point range. The Otters simply couldn't respond on this night to several big runs that allowed the Seawolves to open a 25–point lead midway through the second half before settling on the 17–point final margin.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Kenny Olsen made a short jumper in the paint to give Sonoma a 75–54 lead with 4:44 to play.

WILLIAMS ALMOST GOES BACK–TO–BACK… By finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds, Jared Williams just missed his second consecutive double–double. He posted CSUMB's first double–double of 2018–19 with 10 points and a career–high 11 rebounds last week at Cal State L.A.

CAN YOU DEFEND A FREE THROW? The Otters have been on a near record–setting pace from the free–throw line this season, but Sonoma State seems to have found a way to defend them. CSUMB shot just 59.3 percent (16–of–27) from the line Thursday night, its second–lowest performance of the season. It's lowest percentage (36.4 pct.) came at Sonoma State on Nov. 24.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jahvon Johnson 16; REBOUNDS: Jared Williams 9; ASSISTS: Jahvon Johnson/Tommy Kramer 3; BLOCKS: Joseph Bosetti/Chris Turner/Kyler Warren 1; STEALS: Charlie Tooley 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will conclude the home portion of the 2018–19 schedule when they host San Francisco State Saturday (Feb. 16) as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 1 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 3 p.m.

GO OTTERS!
