Otters Split Doubleheader With Point Loma

CSUMB wins Game 1, 10–1 but falls in the nightcap, 11–3

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay and Point Loma Nazarene University dodged enough raindrops to get in both games of Saturday's baseball doubleheader at the Otter Sports Complex, splitting the twinbill. CSUMB took the opener 10–1 before Point Loma scored eight unanswered runs to win the night cap, 11–3 in seven innings.

In Game 1, the Otters got Kyle Czaplak's (Pacific Grove HS) second home run of the season and doubles from TJ Dove (River Valley HS/Yuba CC) and Kokko Figueiredo (Fortuna Union HS/College of the Redwoods) to support a strong first start of 2019 by junior Greg Steinbeck (San Benito HS). Steinbeck fanned four and walked one while allowing a single run in five innings for the win.

CSUMB also got excellent bullpen work from Kale Leach (Elk Grove/Franklin HS) DJ Martinez (Bullard HS/Fresno CC) and Eduardo Barraza (Wasco HS), who combined to throw four innings of 1–hit, shutout relief.

The Otters fell behind quickly in the nightcap, as Point Loma designated player Colby Kaneshiro hit a 3–run homer in the first inning. A 2–run double by Nick Sheehan (Fresno CC) highlighted a 3–run Otter third that tied the game.

A pair of errors did the Otters in the following inning, however, leading to five unearned runs and a hard–luck loss for junior Connor Fabing (San Benito HS).

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Kyle Czaplak's laser over the right field fence made it 4–0 Otters in the first. Greg Steinbeck and his relief mates never let Point Loma into the game.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Travis Takata's 2–run single capped a 5–run Point Loma fourth that gave the Sea Lions an 8–3 lead. The Otters managed just three base runners over the final four innings.

AND THEN THERE WERE TWO… The list of Otters who have hit in all six games this season is down to two: TJ Dove and newcomer Brian Morley. Dove finished the day 3–for–8 with a pair of doubles while Morley went 3–for–6.

FINDING A WAY… Although TJ Dove and Brian Morley are the only Otters to have hit safely in all six games, they are amongst a quintet of players to have reached safely in all six games. Joining them are Kyle Czaplak, Kyle Dean and Kokko Figueiredo.

MORE MORLEY… The Otters certainly could use more Brian Morley. The senior first baseman and transfer from Old Dominion University leads the team with a .478 batting average (11–for–23) through the first six games.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Kyle Czaplak (1x6, HR [2}, 3 RBI); TJ Dove (3x8, 2B, 3 R); Kokko Figueiredo (2x6, 2B, 2 R, 3 RBI); Nick Sheehan (2x3, 2B, 2 RBI); Greg Steinbeck (W [1–0], 5.0 IP, 1 ER, 4 K, 1 BB).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to America's Finest City to open CCAA play against defending West Region Champion UC San Diego. The 4–game series begins Friday (Feb. 15) at 6 p.m.
