Otters Take Finale 4–2, Earn Key CCAA Split At No. 14 UCSD

CSUMB drops first two games, then rallies to take final two

LA JOLLA, Calif. — A pair of 2–out hits keyed a 4–run fourth inning that lifted No. 27 Cal State Monterey Bay to a 4–2 win over No. 14 UC San Diego and a series split Monday afternoon at Triton Ballpark.

Rain Sunday halted the game in the top of the fourth inning after the Otters put two runners on with nobody out against UCSD starter Ted Stuka. When the game resumed Monday morning, reliever Kyle Lucke walked Kyle Czaplak (Pacific Grove HS) to load the bases before catching two Otters looking, nearly escaping the jam.

A deft piece of hitting by Reed Oster (Napa HS) spoiled Lucke's effort. Oster went the other way with an 0–1 pitch, lining it just inside the third base line to bring home a pair. Junior left fielder Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) followed with a humpback liner to left to plate two more.

Kale Leach (Elk Grove/Folsom Lake College), DJ Martinez (Bullard HS/Fresno CC) and Sean McClure (Norco HS) combined to allow just a single unearned run in relief of starter Parker Fokken (Paloma Valley HS/Chaffey College). Leach (1–0) earned his first Otter win while McClure pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up his first save.

GAME 1 RECAP: UCSD 5, CSUMB 1… Preseason All–American Preston Mott limited the Otters to one run and three hits over 6 2/3 innings as UCSD took the series opener, 5–1. Nick Sheehan's seventh–inning sacrifice fly drove home Brian Morley with the only Otter runner.

GAME 2 RECAP: UCSD 4, CSUMB 3… A 2–RBI double by Kyle Dean pulled the Otters out of an early hole before a Brian Morley sac fly gave CSUMB a 3–2 lead in the eighth inning. But a pair of walks and a wild pitch with one out in the bottom of the ninth set the stage for R.J. Prince to hit a walk–off, 2–run double, giving UCSD the win. Dean and TJ Dove had two hits apiece to lead the Otters.

GAME 3 RECAP: CSUMB 5, UCSD 2… The Otters came from behind again, and, this time, strong pitching efforts from Ethan McRae and Connor Fabing made it stick. McRae gave up two runs in the first then responded with 6 1/3 innings of 3–hit, shutout ball. Fabing allowed just one hit in two innings of shutout relief to earn the save. TJ Dove went 3–for–5 and his 2–run single capped a 3–run Otter fourth, making McRae a winner.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… TJ Dove 6x16 (.375), 3B, 2 R, 3 RBI, SB); Mason Allen (3x8 (.375), 2 2B, 2 R, RBI); Ethan McRae (W, 7.0 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 6 K); Kale Leach (W, 2.0 IP, 0 R, K, BB); Connor Fabing (2 APP, Sv, 2.0 IP, 0 R, 2 H, K); Sean McClure (Sv, 1.0 IP, 0 R, H).

THE LAST WORD… "That was a competitive series and I'm proud of the competitive spirit we displayed. We were far from perfect, but our attitude and resolve enabled us to come back from being down in the series. To win games, you need to make plays and you need to come up with key hits in big spots. Oster and Guerra had key 2–out knocks to put us up, then Guerra made an exceptional play on a ball down the left field line. And, not to be out done, our entire pitching staff was really good. Next week will be another challenge, and we look forward to getting a little better each week." — CSUMB Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home to host a 4–game series against Cal State L.A. Friday (Feb. 22) through Sunday (Feb. 24). The series begins with a 2 p.m. first pitch Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.
