Otters Explode For 14 Hits In Series–Opening 11–6 Win

Brian Morley supports 6 2/3 strong from Daniel Harris with 4 hits, 5 RBI

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay exploded for season highs of 11 runs and 14 hits to open its 4–game series versus Cal State L.A. with an 11–6 win Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB (5–6, 3–2 CCAA) jumped out to leads of 4–0 and 7–1 behind 6 2/3 strong innings from junior starter Daniel Harris (Saddleback College/Capo Valley HS). Senior first baseman Brian Morley (Sacramento Jesuit HS/Old Dominion) provided the offensive support, finishing the day 4–for–5 with a double and five RBI.

Morley was far from the only offensive star in this game, however, as three other Otters posted multi–hit days. Mason Allen (Oakmont HS/Folsom Lake College) went 3–for–5 with a pair of runs. Kyle Dean (Rancho Bernardo HS/BYU) went 2–for–3 with a run and an RBI. Kyle Czaplak (Pacific Grove HS) went 2–for–5 with a double and a pair of RBI.

TJ Dove (Yuba CC/River Valley HS) and Kokko Figueiredo (College of the Redwoods/Fortuna HS) each went 1–for–3 with three runs.
After building a 7–1 lead, a costly Otter error led to five unearned runs scoring in Cal State L.A. seventh, allowing the Golden Eagles to scratch back to within 7–6. But CSUMB put the game away an inning later when Morley's 2–run double and a run–scoring single by Czaplak highlight a 4–run explosion in the eighth inning.

Senior Jeffery Ahern (Anderson HS) fanned three and allowed just one hit in two scoreless innings of relief to earn his first save.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Brian Morley's double to the wall in left center extended the Otter lead to 9–6 in the eighth inning.

DOUBLE THE FUN, PART ONE… The Otters scored double–digit runs for the second time this season with 11 markers Friday afternoon versus Cal State L.A. They also scored 10 runs in a win over Point Loma Nazarene University on Feb. 9.

DOUBLE THE FUN, PART TWO… The 14 hits produced by the Otters Friday marked a season high and their most in a game since pounding 22 against Cal State East Bay on May 4, 2018. It marked the fifth time in 11 games this season the Otters have put double digits in the hits column.

REED AT NINE… Senior third baseman Reed Oster went 1–for–4 Friday to run his hitting streak to eight games. It's the longest streak by an Otter this season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Brian Morley (4x5, 2B, R, 5 RBI); Mason Allen (3x5, 2 R); Kyle Czaplak (2x5, 2B, 2 RBI); TJ Dove (1x3, 3 R); Kokko Figueiredo 1x3, 3 R); Daniel Harris (w [1–2], 6.2 IP, 8 H, 1 ER, 4 K, 0 BB); Jeffery Ahern (Sv [1], 2.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 K, BB)..

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–game set with Cal State L.A. by hosting a doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. Saturday.
