Otters Maintain Sizzle, Rout Cal State L.A. Twice

Otters score early and often to sweep doubleheader, 15–2 and 12–2

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay stayed just about as hot as a team can be, posting a pair of lopsided wins to sweep a doubleheader from visiting Cal State L.A. Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

The Otters won Game 1 15–2 before rolling to a 12–2 win in the 7–inning nightcap. The wins give CSUMB (7–6, 5–2 CCAA) the series win heading into Sunday's finale.

CSUMB did virtually everything right Saturday, getting strong pitching and defense to go along with its sizzling sticks. Junior Ethan McRae (Fresno CC) threw five innings of 2–hit, shutout ball to earn the victory in Game 1. Fellow junior Greg Steinbeck (San Benito HS) fanned seven in 6 2/3 innings to get the win in Game 2.

The Otter defense didn't make any errors and, it can be argued, neither did the Otter offense. TJ Dove (Yuba CC) led off Game 1 with a solo home run, opening the floodgates as they scored 12 runs in the first three innings. A 2–run, inside-the-park home run by Nicholas Napoli (Bullard HS/MPC) capped a 4–run second that got things rolling in Game 2.

Senior first baseman Brian Morley (Sacramento Jesuit HS/Old Dominion Univ.) continued to swing the hottest bat for CSUMB, finishing the doubleheader 4–for–6 with a double, a triple, a home run, four runs and six RBI.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… TJ Dove led off the bottom of the first inning with his first home run of the season. It sparked the Otters to 12–0 lead that would never be threatened.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Nicholas Napoli's second–inning gapper allowed him to come all the way around to put a bow on a 4–run second inning. The Otters scored in six consecutive innings, building their lead to 12–0 before L.A. scored twice in the final frame.

HOW DO YOU (DOUBLE) FIGURE, PART I…  The Otters have posted double figure runs (11, 15, 12) in each of the first three games of the series versus Cal State L.A. It's the first time they've posted double figure runs three times against one opponent since beating Cal State San Marcos 14–10, 15–10 and 10–0 Apr. 30–May 1, 2016.

HOW DO YOU (DOUBLE) FIGURE, PART II… Should the Otters score in double figures Sunday versus Cal State L.A., they would post four consecutive double figure game for just the second time in school history. They also did it last season, with two against Point Loma (13–6, 12–7) and two against Western Oregon (13–3, 14–13) Feb. 9–17. They have never posted double figure runs in five consecutive games.

REED AT 11… Senior third baseman Reed Oster went 4–for–9 Saturday to run his hitting streak to 11 games. It's the longest streak by an Otter this season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Ethan McRae (W [2–1], 5.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 3 K); Greg Steinbeck (W [2–0], 6.2 IP, 2 R, 7 K); Brian Morley (4x6, 2B, 3B, HR [1], 4 R, 6 RBI); Kyle Czaplak (5x5, 2B, 3B, 4 R, 4 RBI); TJ Dove (3x9, 2B, HR [1], 3 R, 3 RBI); Nicholas Napoli (2x3, 3B, HR [1], SB, 4 R, 3 RBI).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game against Cal State L.A. with a single game Sunday starting at 11 a.m.
