Fokken Pitches Gem As Otters Complete Sweep Of L.A.

Parker Fokken goes 7 1/3 strong, Brian Morley homers in 4–2 victory

SEASIDE, Calif. — After torturing Cal State L.A. pitching for 38 runs in winning the first three games, Cal State Monterey Bay got just enough offense Sunday to support a superb outing from junior Parker Fokken (Paloma Valley HS/Chaffey College) to complete a series sweep of the Golden Eagles with a 4–2 win at the Otter Sports Complex.

Fokken improved to 2–0 by throwing 7 1/3 innings of 5–hit ball in which he allowed no earned runs. He fanned two and walked one.

His offense scratched out single runs in the first and third innings before senior first baseman Brian Morley (Old Dominion University) hit a 2–run bomb in the seventh for what proved to be the winning runs.

Senior Kale Leach (Elk Grove/Franklin HS) threw a perfect ninth to earn his first save.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Kale Leach took the ball to start the ninth inning. The big senior righty put down the Golden Eagles in order to earn his first save.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… The Otters earned their first series sweep of 2019 by taking all four games from Cal State L.A. this weekend. It's their first series sweep since they won all four at Cal State San Marcos Mar. 29–31, 2018.

HOW SWEEP IT IS, PART II… On the flip side, the Otters have been swept in a series since Cal State Dominguez Hills took four games from Mar. 28–30, 2014.

FINISHING WITH A BANG… One player who is sorry to see Cal State L.A. go is Brian Morley, who capped a monster weekend with two walks and a 2–run home run Sunday afternoon. He finished the 4–game series hitting .643 (9–for–14) with two doubles, a triple and two home runs for a slugging percentage of 1.357. For good measure, he added six runs and 13 RBI.

CLOSER BY COMMITTEE… After Connor Fabing saved a CSUMB record 10 games in 2018, Kale Leach became the fifth different Otter to earn a save in 2019 Sunday afternoon. The other four are Jeffery Ahern, Fabing, Sean McClure and Greg Steinbeck.

ONE STREAK ENDS, ANOTHER CONTINUES FOR OSTER… Senior third baseman Reed Oster saw his personal record 11–game hitting streak end after going 0–for–3 Sunday versus Cal State L.A. He walked once, though, and has reached base safely in 12 consecutive games.

WALK THIS WAY… Cal State L.A. pitching yielded 12 walks to the Otters Sunday afternoon. That's tied for the second most walks in a game in Otter history. The Otters drew 14 walks against Hillsdale College on Mar. 22, 2011.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Parker Fokken (W [2–0], 7.1 IP, 5 H, 0 ER, 2 K); Kale Leach (Sv [1], 1.0 IP, 0 H, 0 R); Brian Morley (1x3, HR [2], 2 BB, R , 2 RBI); Kyle Dean (2x3, 2B, 2 BB, 2 R).

THE LAST WORD… "Every contest in our conference is a challenge, so it was impressive for us to put together a weekend like this. We pitched well all weekend and we had some big weekends out of our position players. Brian Morley, in particular, was exceptional. We had others that had big moments as well, but overall it was a great team series win. And now it's back to work for another challenging weekend up north." — CSUMB Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head north for a 4–game series at perennial contender Chico State Mar. 1–3 in Chico.
