Comeback Runs Out Of Time As Point Loma Hangs On

Otters leave tying runs on base in the ninth in 7–5 defeat

SEASIDE, Calif. — A diving stop by second baseman Travis Takata cut short Cal State Monterey Bay's final rally, allowing visiting Point Loma Nazarene University to escape with a 7–5 win Friday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

One got the feeling that it was just a matter of time before the Otters completed their comeback effort after falling behind 7–1 in the third inning. The CSUMB bullpen held firm, finishing the game with six shutout innings, allowing the offense time to get on track.

CSUMB clawed its was back with single runs in the fifth and the seventh. Devin Orr's (Roseville HS) 2–out single capped a 2–run eighth and gave the Otters life.

A leadoff single in the ninth by Brian Morley (Carmichael/Jesuit HS) and a fielding error put the tying run on base with out one. Pinch hitter Derrick Edwards (Mary Star of the Sea HS) had a terrific, extended at bat before finally succumbing to a pitch out of the zone for the second out. Nicholas Napoli (Fresno/Bullard HS/MPC) drove a hard grounder up the middle that seemed destined to drive home Morley and send the tying run to third, but Takata laid out to corral the ball and flip to second for the force that ended the game.

GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Point Loma second baseman Travis Takata robbed Nicholas Napoli of a sure RBI single before flipping to second for the force and the game's final out.

OH WHAT A RELIEF IT IS… The Otters got fantastic relief work from junior Max Jones (Bishop Amat HS/Hamilton College) and senior Austin Wahl (Palma HS/Cornell University), who combined to throw six innings of 4–hit, shutout relief. Jones allowed just two hits and no walks with one strikeout in three innings. Wahl finished the game with three scoreless, 2–hit innings of his own in which he fanned four.

TJ IS AT IT AGAIN… Senior center fielder TJ Dove (River Valley HS/Yuba CC) has picked up right where he left off in 2018. After setting CSUMB records with a 22–game hitting streak and a 48–game reached base streak as a junior, Dove went 1–for–4 Friday and has now hit safely in all four games this season. Dove has reached base safely in 59 of 61 games as an Otter.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Kyle Dean (2x5, 2B); Reed Oster (2x3, 2B, R, RBI); Nicholas Napoli (2x4, R); Max Jones (3.0 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 3 K); Austin Wahl (3.0 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 4 K).

THE LAST WORD… "Point Loma has a good team and they are playing better baseball through the first two games. We will play better. We have a confident group that is capable. Encouraging outings by Wahl and Jones. They were able to shutdown a good offense. Tomorrow's another day and we look forward to playing." — CSUMB Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… With rain wiping out Game 2 of Friday's scheduled doubleheader, the Otters and Sea Lions will finish their 4–game series with a doubleheader Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch for Game 1 is scheduled for 11 a.m.
