Hot Shooting Dominguez Hills Pulls Away Late For 90–72 Win

Koen Sapwell and Jahvon Johnson lead Otters with 19, 15 points respectively

CARSON, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team kept things interesting for most of the night, but hot–shooting Cal State Dominguez Hills never cooled off en route to a 90–72 win Thursday in The Torodome.

The Otters got 19 points from Koen Sapwell (Adelaide, South Australia) and 15 from junior guard Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS), but it wasn't enough to offset a 32–point effort from Toro big man Mikey Hatfield, who went 4–for–5 from 3–point range while making all 10 free throws he attempted.

Led by Hatfield, the Toros knocked down an Otter opponent season–high 14 3–pointers. Dominguez Hills shot 48 percent from beyond the arc (14–for–29) and 87 percent from the line (20–for–23).

CSUMB did a lot right for its part. It shot 48 percent from the floor, 79 percent from the stripe and turned the ball over just nine times. That helped the Otters keep the game within reach until a game–ending 13–3 Toro run put the game away.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… David Howard grabbed a defensive rebound for Dominguez Hills with the Toros up 88–72 and 1:21 remaining in regulation.

TAKING CARE OF THE ROCK… The Otters took good care of the ball for the second consecutive game, following last Saturday's season–low six turnovers against San Bernardino with just nine turnovers Thursday at Dominguez Hills. The 15 total turnovers is CSUMB's lowest 2–game total at the NCAA level and its lowest total since committing 14 turnovers in consecutive games at Simpson College (7) and Holy Names College (7) on Feb. 13–14, 2004.

TIP OF THE CAP… A tip of the Otter cap goes to CSUDH's Mikey Hatfield, who became the first player to score 30 or more points against the Otters this season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Koen Sapwell 19; REBOUNDS: Tommy Kramer 5; ASSISTS: Koen Sapwell 4; BLOCKS: None; STEALS: Koen Sapwell 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their brief trip to the Greater Los Angles area with a Saturday afternoon game at Cal State L.A. as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 1 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 3 p.m.
