Pitching Dominates In Tough Home–Opener Loss For Otters

Otters fall to Point Loma in rare 1–0 decision

SEASIDE, Calif. — A pair of choppers that squeezed just inside the first base line proved to be the difference as No. 21 Cal State Monterey Bay dropped a brilliantly pitched home opener to Point Loma Nazarene University 1–0 Thursday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

Travis Takata led off the fifth inning with the first of those ground balls. After advancing to third via a sacrifice, he came home with the game's only marker when ninth–place hitter Miguel Cazares also found that crease down the line with two outs.

The two seeing–eye hits spoiled a brilliant outing from Otter junior Daniel Harris (Saddleback College/Cap Valley HS), who fanned six in five strong innings. Senior Jeffery Ahern (Anderson Union HS) also looked solid in three innings of shutout relief.

For its part, the Otter offense created several scoring opportunities of its own. CSUMB put runners in scoring position in each of the first five innings against Point Loma starter Zack Noll, who fanned five in 4 1/3 innings of shutout ball. The best Otter opportunity came in the fifth, when a double off the wall by Kyle Dean (San Diego/BYU) help CSUMB load the bases with just one out before PLNU relief pitcher Nathan Garkow closed the door.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Brian Morley struck out swinging with Kyle Dean on first to end the ninth.

FOR (HOME) OPENERS… Thursday's loss was just the second home–opening setback in Walt White's nine seasons at the Otter helm. CSUMB is 8–6 all–time in home openers dating back to its inaugural season of 2006.

A RARE GEM… Thursday's 1–0 gem was just the fifth 1–0 decision in Otter baseball history and the first since a 1–0 loss to then No. 7 Cal Poly Pomona on Mar. 8, 2015. The Otters are now 2–3 all–time in games featuring a single run.

THE GOOD HANDS PEOPLE… The Otter defensive projected to be a strength in 2019 and so far that is proving to be the case. The Otters have played error–free ball in two of their first three games this season. Its the first time that has happened in .26 games dating back to last April.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Kyle Dean (2x5, 2B); Kyle Czaplak (1x5, 2B); Brian Morley (2x4, BB); Daniel Harris (L, 5.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 6 K, 0 BB); Jeffery Ahern (3.0 IP, 3H, 0 R, 2 K, 0 BB).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 4–game series versus Point Loma with a doubleheader Friday. First pitch has been moved up to 10 a.m. as the team try to beat rains expected in the Monterey Bay area Friday afternoon.
