Otters Lead Wire–To–Wire To Knock Off Humboldt State

Otters lead by as many as 19 in a 62–55 win over the CCAA leaders

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay jumped to an early lead and never looked back to hand CCAA–leading Humboldt State a 62–55 defeat Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB got 16 points and six rebounds from Katie Fitzgerald (Mater Dei HS) and 12 points and a season–high nine rebounds from Sylvia Vartazarian (Glendale HS/Glendale College).

The big story came on the defensive end, however, where the Otters put the clamps on Lumberjack star Alexia Thrower. Thrower entered the game leading the CCAA in both scoring (22.6 ppg) and rebounding (10.9 rpg) but managed just 14 points and six boards Saturday.

Although they never trailed it took the Otters until late in the first half to gain some meaningful separation. They opened their first double digit lead at 31–20 on a Lizzy Benton (Thousand Oaks HS) 3–pointer with 1:49 left in the first half.

CSUMB eventually expanded its lead to as many as 19 points in the second before a late Humboldt run cut the score to its final 7–point margin.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Katie Fitzgerald made the first of two free throws to give CSUMB a 61–53 lead with 10 seconds remaining.

THE BEST OF TIMES… The Otters scored 22 points in the third quarter Saturday versus Humboldt State, their second best quarter of the season. Their best quarter also came in the third when they scored 25 points against Dominican University on Nov. 17.

IT'S A TEAM GAME… Almost everybody had a hand in Saturday's win over Humboldt State. All eight Otters who played scored and pulled down at least one rebound. Five different players passed at least one assist.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Katie Fitzgerald 16; REBOUNDS: Sylvia Vartazarian 9; ASSISTS: Chyna Dews 4; BLOCKS: Sylvia Vartazarian 3; STEALS: Katie Fitzgerald 2.

THE LAST WORD… "I was proud of our effort today for 40 minutes. We played with energy and executed our game plan and were rewarded for it with a big win against a very good Humboldt State team." — CSUMB Head Coach CJ Pace

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will begin a rare split week with a road doubleheader at Chico State Thursday (Dec. 12). The women will tip–off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip–off at 7:30 p.m.
