Vartazarian’s Season–High 20 Not Enough At Chico State

Sylvia Vartazarian leads all scorers and rebounders in 69–58 defeat

CHICO, Calif. — A season–high 20 points from Sylvia Vartazarian (Glendale HS/Glendale College) wasn't enough to overcome a second–quarter slump as Chico State pulled away for a 69–58 win Thursday night in Acker Gym.

CSUMB led for much of the first quarter until an epic dry spell in the second allowed Chico to take control. The Otters scored just four points in the period to springboard a 20–4 run that turned an 18–14 Otter lead into a 34–22 Chico advantage.

The Otters pulled to with six points several times in the second half but would draw no closer.

Vartazarian led both teams in both scoring and rebounding, adding eight boards to her 20–point game. Katie Fitzgerald (Mater Dei HS) and Camille Parker (Alta Loma HS) also reached double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN…a Maddy Wong 3–pointer gave Chico a 63–46 lead with 2:12 remaining in regulation.

WELCOME TO THE 20–POINT CLUB… Sylvia Vartazarian became the second Otter to score 20 points in a game this by leading all scorers with 20 Thursday night in Chico. Katie Fitzgerald score a team season–high 21 points against Cal Poly Pomona on Nov. 23.

DOUBLE THE FUN… A pair of late free throws got Katie Fitzgerald into double digits for the sixth time in her seven collegiate appearances. She is the first Otter freshman ever to pull off that feat. The previous record belonged to Michelle Hale, who scored in double figures in four of her first six games as a freshman during the 2002–03 season.

ICE, ICE BABY… The Otters went more than six minutes without scoring as part of their 4–point second quarter Thursday night in Chico. The four points matched the fewest ever scored by the Otters in a second period (vs. Cal State East Bay on Dec. 2, 2017) and mark the second–fewest scored in any period since the NCAA adopted the quarter system for the 2015–16 season (2 at Cal Poly Pomona on Dec. 29, 2017).

TURNABOUT IS FAIR PLAY… It's worth noting that the Otter defense has stymied its fair share of opponents as well. The fewest points ever allowed in a period by the Otters was two in a 73–47 win at San Francisco State on Jan. 20, 2018.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Sylvia Vartazarian 20; REBOUNDS: Sylvia Vartazarian 8; ASSISTS: Chyna Dews/Camille Parker 3; BLOCKS: Katie Fitzgerald/Sylvia Vartazarian 1; STEALS: Chyna Dews/Camille Parker 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home to close the 2019 calendar year with a pair of doubleheaders in The Kelp Bed. The fun begins Saturday (Dec. 14) when Cal State San Bernardino visits for a matinee. The women will tip–off at 1 p.m. and the men will tip at 3 p.m.
