Second–Half Rally Leads Otters Past Coyotes, 68–67

Sylvia Vartazarian scores 24, Lizzy Benton adds 18

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay overcame an 8–point deficit in the final five minutes to hand visiting Cal State San Bernardino a 68–67 defeat Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

Sophomore guard Serena Toney (Seattle/Roosevelt HS) broke a 64–64 tie by drilling a 3–pointer with 1:17 remaining. The Coyotes had a chance to tie late, but Tehya Burroughs, who finished with a game–high 26 points, missed the second of two free–throw attempts with seven seconds remaining and the Otters ran out the clock.

CSUMB led for most of the first half and held a 31–26 lead at the break. But San Bernardino came out of lockerroom on fire, riding a 10–0 run to its first lead of the day at 36–31. The Coyotes held the lead for almost the entirety of the next 14 minutes until a driving Fitzgerald layup put the Otters up 61–60 inside of four minutes remaining.

Sylvia Vartazarian (Glendale HS/Glendale College) scored a team–season high 24 points and led the Otters with six rebounds. Freshman Lizzy Benton (Thousand Oaks HS) came off the bench to score a season–high 18 points while fellow freshman Katie Fitzgerald (Mater Dei HS) added a team season–high seven assists.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Katie Fitzgerald grabbed the rebound off a wild Coyote shot with one second

20–20 VISION… By scoring a team season–high 24 points in Saturday's win over San Bernardino, Sylvia Vartazarian became the first Otter to score 20 or more points in consecutive games this season. She scored 20 Thursday night in Chico. She is the first Otter to accomplish that feat since Aubri Smith did it in four straight from Nov. 11–18, 2017.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… By scoring a collegiate high 18 points in Saturday's win over San Bernardino, Lizzy Benton became the fifth Otter to score in double figures this season.

LUCKY NUMBER 7… By passing a team season–high seven assists in Saturday's win over San Bernardino, Katie Fitzgerald became the first Otter to accomplish that feat since Chyna Dews passed seven against Cal Poly Pomona on Jan. 31.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Sylvia Vartazarian 24; REBOUNDS: Camille Parker/Sylvia Vartazarian 6; ASSISTS: Katie Fitzgerald 7; BLOCKS: Lizzy Benton/Serena Toney/Sylvia Vartazarian 1; STEALS: Camille Parker 5.

THE LAST WORD… "We battled. It was nice to Benton come alive and shoot the ball well. I'm proud of their effort." — CSUMB Head Coach CJ Pace

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will close the 2019 calendar year by hosting Cal State Dominguez Hills for a Winter Solstice doubleheader on Saturday (Dec. 21). The women will tip–off at 1 p.m. and the men will tip–off at 3 p.m.
