SEASIDE, Calif. — A career–high 17–point game from sophomore
Serena Toney (Seattle/Roosevelt HS) proved to be the highlight as Cal State Monterey Bay put a the wraps on the 2019 portion of its schedule with an 81–62 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.
Foul trouble plagued the Otters from the outset as their top two rebounders —
Camille Parker and
Sylvia Vartazarian — each picked up a pair of fouls inside the first four minutes. Dominguez Hills, which came into the day with a significant size advantage, rode the foul trouble to a 39–24 edge on the boards and 18 second chance points.
The game remained close throughout the first half, with Dominguez Hills eking out a 34–30 lead after 20 minutes. The Toros took control at the start of the third quarter, using a 16–5 run to pull ahead 50–35. The Otters never got within single digits over the final 16 minutes.
In addition to Toney, freshman
Katie Fitzgerald (Mater Dei HS) scored 15 points and chipped in four assists.
THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Lea Anderson made a pair of free throws to give the Toros a 75–59 lead with 2:19 to play.
TONEY FROM DOWNTOWN… Serena Toney went 5–for–6 from 3–point range Saturday against Dominguez Hills. She became just the seventh player in Otter history to make five 3–pointers in a game and the first since
Victoria Dorn made six against Stanislaus State on Feb. 24, 2017.
TIS THE SEASON… The Otters did a bit of giving this holiday season. In their six games since Thanksgiving CSUMB committed 20 or more turnovers four times, including 21 turnovers Saturday versus Dominguez Hills.
THE BACKCOURT WAS HOT… The Otter backcourt trio of
Chyna Dews,
Katie Fitzgerald and
Serena Toney sizzled Saturday, shooting 15–for–26 (58 percent) from the floor and 8–for–12 (67 percent) from 3–point range.
THE REST WERE NOT… With that trio out of the mix, the rest of the Otters were 7–for–26 (27 percent) from the floor and 0–for–8 from long range.
