Four In Double Figures Can’t Stop Late Pomona Rally

Baylie Pierson, Jenna Tobin with 14 kills each in 5–set loss at Pomona

POMONA, Calif. — Four players with double–figure kills wasn't enough to stop Cal Poly Pomona from rallying twice to take a 20–25, 25–23, 17–25,25–15, 15–4 decision Saturday night in Kellogg Arena.

Baylie Pierson (Vista Murietta HS) and Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) led the way with 14 kills apiece. Freshmen Taylor Ybanez (Rancho Cucamonga/Los Osos HS) and Mollin Helfrich (Pinole/Salesian Prep) added 11 and 10 kills respectively.

Tobin completed a double–double with 17 digs, sharing team–high honors with freshman Madi Lombardi (Carmel HS). Pierson and Malia Tuatagaloa (San Rafael HS) each served four aces.

After falling behind two sets to one, Pomona caught fire to open the fourth frame. The Broncos started with an 8–2 run and never let the Otters get close to win 25–15.

They carried that momentum into the fifth set, starting with a 9–1 spurt that put the outcome on ice.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… an Ally Wilder kill capped a 9–1 Bronco run to open the deciding fifth set.

THEY'RE ACES… Baylie Pierson and Malia Tuatagaloa each served four aces Saturday at Pomona. That ties them for No. 5 on the Otter list for aces in a 5–set match.

300 WATCH… With 14 kills Saturday at Pomona, Jenna Tobin raised her season total to a team–leading 279. She needs 21 more to become the seventh player in Otter history to record 300 kills in a season.

THE DEUCE IS LOOSE… Close sets have been the bane of CSUMB's existence over the middle portion of the season. After going 5–2 in their first seven deuce sets of 2019, the Otters have dropped 12 consecutive deuce set opportunities, including Saturday 25–23 second set.

HANGING 10, DOUBLE–DOUBLE EDITION… With 14 kills and 17 digs Saturday at Pomona, Jenna Tobin recorded her team–leading 10th double–double of 2019. That matches her total from 2018, when she earned All–CCAA honors.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Baylie Pierson 19.5; KILLS: Baylie Pierson/Jenna Tobin 14; BLOCKS: Taylor Ybanez 4; ACES: Baylie Pierson/Malia Tuatagaloa 4; DIGS: Madi Lombardi/Jenna Tobin 17.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home to close the 2019 season with a pair of matches next weekend. They'll host Humboldt State on Friday (Nov. 15) and Sonoma State Saturday (Nov. 16). First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. both nights.
