Otters Find A Way, Rally Twice To Take 5–Set Thriller

CSUMB saves three match points to rally past Humboldt State

Story Links

SEASIDE, Calif. — Everything came together for the young, talented Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team Friday night as the lessons learned from a season chalk full of close matches paid off in a thrilling 5–set win over Humboldt State in The Kelp Bed.

The Otters had to rally twice in this one. They came from two sets to one down to force a fifth. Then, with their backs against the proverbial wall down 14–11, they saved three match points in a 5–0 finish to complete the 25–15, 25–27, 14–25, 25–14, 16–14 win.

Virtually everybody had a hand in this victory, though many of the usual suspects led the way. Junior outside hitter Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) put down a match–high 18 kills to lead the offense.

Junior opposite Baylie Pierson (Vista Murietta HS) added two aces and a career–high 15 kills. Senior middle blocker Samantha Brennan (Huntington Beach HS) made her presence felt with eight kills, three blocks and a .438 attack percentage.

After the Otters rolled in the opening set, they rallied from 24–20 down in the second but couldn't finish the comeback as Humboldt held on for the 27–25 win. The teams then traded 25–14 wins to set up the winner–take–all fifth. That's where the young Otters showed they are coming of age.

The Lumberjacks used runs of 6–2 and 7–4 to break a 7–7 tied and give themselves three cracks at match point. The Otters didn't flinch, however, using kills from Pierson, Mollin Helfrich (Pinole/Salesian Prep) and Tobin to tie the match at 14.

A Humboldt timeout served only to set the stage for junior defensive specialist Malia Tuatagaloa (San Rafael HS), who proceeded to serve back–to–back aces to secure the win.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHENMalia Tuatagaloa caught Odelia Ryan twice with consecutive aces to break a 14–14 tie in the fifth set.

WHAT A COMEBACK… Saving match points to win is a rare event in volleyball. Saving match points to win in the fifth set is nearly unheard of. Friday's win over Humboldt State marked the first such win for the Otters since they rallied to beat Humboldt State in an 18–16 fifth set on Nov. 2, 2015.

EVEN MORE RARE STILL… The last time the Otters saved multiple match points to rally for a win happened at Chico State on Oct. 26, 2013, when they rallied from two sets down then saved a pair of match points in a 30–28 Set 4 victory en route to the 5–set match win.

RAREST OF ALL… The Otters saved three match points to win for the first time since the year before moving to the NCAA Division II level in 2004. It may in fact be the first time in program history, but complete records are not available prior to the 2003 season.

MOVIN' ON UP… With 18 kills Friday night, Jenna Tobin vaulted from 13th to 11th on the Otter career kills list with 576. Baylie Pierson, meanwhile, became the 18th player in Otter history to record 400 career kills (401).

THE 300 CLUB… Jenna Tobin lifted her season kill total to 297 with her 18–kill effort Friday night. She needs three more to become the seventh player in Otter history to post multiple 300 kills in a season.

THE 50 CLUB… With 50 assists Friday night versus Humboldt State, sophomore setter Sophia Torres joined Kelsey Johnston and Nicki Sanderson as the only members of a unique club. They are the only setters in CSUMB history to pass 50 assists in a match twice in the same season. Torres had a career–high 56 assists in a win over Hawaii–Hilo on Sept. 13.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jenna Tobin 20.5; KILLS: Jenna Tobin 18; BLOCKS: Samantha Brennan 3; ACES: Four Otters 2; DIGS: Alexa Blunt 15.

THE LAST WORD… "This team is one of the most talented teams I've ever coached. Our staff has never stopped believing in them. Their ability and their talent and tonight, in the 5th set, they believed in that too. I am so proud of all of our kids, especially Malia Tuatagaloa who went to the service line and believed in herself and believed in this team and took it home." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 2019 season by hosting Sonoma State Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. Arrive early as the Otters will be honoring their three seniors — Samantha Brennan, Kyra Galloway and Payton Trimm — in pregame ceremonies starting at 6:50 p.m.
