Top–Ranked CSUSB Proves Its Ranking With Friday Sweep

Jenna Tobin moves into the CSUMB season Top 20 for kills Friday

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Cal State San Bernardino looked every bit the nation's No. 1 ranked team Friday night, getting off to a fast start en route to a 25–15, 25–17–25–18 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in Coussoulis Arena.

San Bernardino sprinted to an 11–2 lead in the opener before the Otters found their footing and played the Coyotes even for the balance of the set. The Otters led all the way through 14–13 in the second set when San Bernardino caught fire again, finishing with a 12–3 run to take a 2–0 lead in the match.

CSUMB stayed close in the fourth set as well and was down just 17–13 when a final push got the Coyotes over the top.

Freshman Mollin Helfrich (Pinole/Salesian Prep) led the Otters with eight kills and one block.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Consecutive Coyote blocks increased San Bernardino's lead to 20–13 in the third set. The Otters never got closer than five points the rest of the way.

TOP 20 TOBIN… Jenna Tobin put down seven kills Friday night at San Bernardino to jump into the Top 20 on the Otter single–season kills list with 265. She skipped past a quartet of former greats (Julia Ashen, Kerri Sudarsana, Maddy Underwood and Anela Visesio) into the No. 19 slot. She needs eight kills to break her personal record of 272 (2018) and 35 kills to become the 14th player in Otter history with a 300–kill season.

SOPHIA 600… With 23 assists Friday night in San Bernardino, Sophia Torres became the 10th player in Otter history to set 600 assists in a single season. Next up is Monique Sena with 639 assists (2010) in ninth place.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Mollin Helfrich 8.5; KILLS: Mollin Helfrich 8; BLOCKS: Mollin Helfrich/Jenna Tobin 1; ACES: Kaila Uota 1; DIGS: Sophia Torres 8.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play their final road match of 2019 when they face Cal Poly Pomona Saturday in Kellogg Arena. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
