Turnovers, Free Throws Sink Otters In Loss At Sonoma

Camille Parker scores 15, Sylvia Vartazarian 12 in 69–55 loss

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Hot Sonoma State free–throw shooting and some untimely Cal State Monterey Bay turnovers proved too much to overcome as Sonoma State rode a 25–point first quarter to a 69–55 win Saturday afternoon in The Wolves Den.

CSUMB got a season–high 15 points from Camille Parker (Alta Loma HS) and 12 points from Sylvia Vartazarian (Glendale HS). But the Otters turned the ball over 20 times as a team while Sonoma made 25 free throws and shot 83 percent from the stripe.

After taking a 25–14 lead following the first quarter, Sonoma slowly inched its lead up for the balance of the game. The Seawolves never ran away with the game until opening up a 19–point lead late in the fourth quarter, but the Otters never got closer than nine points after halftime.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Aaryn Pickett made a free throw with 3:22 remaining to give Sonoma a 63–44 lead.

A SORT OF HOMECOMING… Saturday was a nice homecoming of sorts for Otter freshman Sidni Wise-Wright, who redshirted at Sonoma State during the 2018–19 season. Wise-Wright enjoyed her best collegiate game to date, finishing with six points and a team–high six rebounds.

FROM DOWNTOWN… The Otters achieved the best long–range shooting game in almost a year by converting 50 percent (5–of–10) from beyond the arc Saturday at Sonoma State. It was their best shooting game since making 57.1 percent (8–of–14) at Dominican University on Dec. 19, 2018

FREE THROWS ARE COSTLY… After Sonoma State converted 83.3 percent (25–of–30) from the line Saturday afternoon, Otter opponents are converting at a 78.5 percent clip for the season. That mark would rank in the Top 25 nationally for a team this season.

QUANTITY AND QUALITY… Not only are CSUMB's opponents making free throws at an insane clip, they have been prolific from the stripe as well. Opponents are averaging more than 10 more free throws made per game than the Otters through the first four games this season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Camille Parker 15; REBOUNDS: Sidni Wise-Wright 6; ASSISTS: Camille Parker 3; BLOCKS: None; STEALS: Camille Parker 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home for a brief 2–game homestand next week when they host Stanislaus State and Humboldt State. The action begins with a doubleheader Thursday (Dec. 5) against Stanislaus. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
