Miracle Comeback Falls Three Points Short In OT at Sonoma

Otters erase 19–point deficit in final six minutes of 85–82 OT defeat

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — A miracle Cal State Monterey Bay comeback forced overtime before host Sonoma State held on for an 85–82 overtime victory Saturday evening in The Wolves Den.

Sophomore Tommy Kramer (Amador Valley HS) scored all of his career–high 17 points after halftime to lead the surge. Senior Joseph Bosetti (Red Bluff HS) didn't play in the first half before coming on to score 14 points in 16 minutes down the stretch.

Sophomore J.R. Schilling (Lake Oswego [Ore.] HS) made his third start and pulled down a career–high 11 rebounds.

The Otters trailed by 20 points with 14 minutes remaining and trailed by 19 with just 6:16 to play before catching fire to nearly steal the game. That's when an Andre Ferguson (Los Angeles/Pacific Hills HS) 3–pointer kicked off a 22–6 run over the next six minutes, culminating in a Kramer trey that tied the game, 69–69, with 33 seconds left.

The Otters got a stop, but a coast–to–cast sprint by Maurice Woods (Modesto/Johansen HS) couldn't produce a shot to win at the buzzer.

CSUMB cooled off once overtime began, making just 4–of–10 from the field and 4–of–8 from the line in the extra five minutes. Sonoma scored the first five points of OT and the Otters couldn't get over the hump again.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… the Seawolves successfully inbounded the ball following a Jahvon Johnson 3–pointer with less than two seconds remaining.

FIRE AND ICE (OR, RATHER ICE THAN FIRE)… The Otters came out of the gate glacially cold Saturday, missing their first 11 3–point attempts and 15 of their first 16. They caught fire after that, going 8–for–15 over the final 18:30 of regulation to spark the comeback.

A CAREER–HIGH FOR SCHILLING… Not only did J.R. Schilling become the first Otter to record double–digit rebounds this season, finishing with 11 Saturday, he recorded a career high as well. His previous high was eight against Cal State L.A. on Dec. 16.

WORKING OVERTIME… Saturday's game at Sonoma State was the fourth time the Otters have played into overtime in 2–plus seasons under Isaac Williams. The Otters are now 2–2 in those games.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Tommy Kramer 17; REBOUNDS: J.R. Schilling 11; ASSISTS: Jared Williams/Maurice Woods 2; BLOCKS: None; STEALS: Joseph Bosetti/J.R. Schilling 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home for a brief 2–game homestand next week when they host Stanislaus State and Humboldt State. The action begins with a doubleheader Thursday (Dec. 5) against Stanislaus. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
