Stanislaus Rallies Late To Take 73–69 Decision

Jahvon Johnson, Maurice Woods lead balanced effort with 14 points each

SEASIDE, Calif. — In a game featuring several strong rallies, Stanislaus State pulled off the final one to earn a 73–69 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) and Maurice Woods (Modesto/Johansen HS) led a balanced Otter offense with 14 points piece. Vida Faniel scored 28 points to lead Stanislaus.

The teams played through seven ties and eight lead changes, numbers that, on the surface, don't particularly stand out. But it was the wild momentum swings that made Thursday's affair so entertaining.

Following a first half in which neither team led by more than four points, Stanislaus raced to its biggest lead of the night, 40–33, in the first four minutes and change after the restart. The Otters responded with runs of 14–0 and 20–4 to take their biggest lead six minutes later at 53–44.

CSUMB was able to maintain a cushion and still led by eight, 62–54, when Stanislaus began the final push. A 19–7 run finally gave the Warriors the lead at 71–69 with 21 seconds left in regulation. A turnover on the ensuing Otter possession and a pair of Warrior free throws sealed the game.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Charlie Tooley's desperation charge upcourt following a missed Stanislaus free throw couldn't beat the final horn.

JAHVON'S 1K WATCH… By scoring 14 points Thursday versus Stanislaus State, Jahvon Johnson moved to within five points of 1,000 for his career. He is looking to become just the sixth player in Otter history to score 1,000 points.

MORE JAHVON SCORING… Jahvon Johnson needs 10 points to pass Joe Mitchell (2006–09) for the No. 5 spot on the Otter career scoring list.

A 10–SPOT FOR THE OTTERS… The Otters spread the ball around Thursday versus Stanislaus State. All 10 Otters credited with more than one minute played scored and nine of those 10 grabbed at least one rebound.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jahvon Johnson/Maurice Woods 14; REBOUNDS: Joseph Bosetti 7; ASSISTS: Maurice Woods 4; BLOCKS: None; STEALS: Jahvon Johnson/Dwight Murray/Charlie Tooley 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters close the first weekend of December by hosting Humboldt State for a Saturday matinee doubleheader. The women will tip–off at 1 p.m. and the men will tip–off at 3 p.m.
