Otters Come Up Clutch Late To Defeat Humboldt State

Charlie Tooley scores 21, Jahvon Johnson reaches 1,000 points in a 76–71 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay came up with big buckets and stops when it needed them most to come back late and take a 76–71 decision from Humboldt State Saturday evening in The Kelp Bed.

Senior guard Charlie Tooley (Granite Bay HS) came off the bench to lead all scorers with 21 points. Tommy Kramer (Amador Valley HS) scored 11 points and J.R. Schilling (Lake Oswego [Ore.] HS) added 10.

Senior guard Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) score seven points to become just the sixth player in Otter history to surpass 1,000 career points.

The teams played through seven ties and six lead changes in the first half before Humboldt took the biggest lead for either team at 45–33 in the final seconds of the period. The Otters pulled to within three points of the lead five times, but couldn't get over the hump until Ben Carter (Adelaide, South Australia) buried a 3–pointer to put CSUMB on top 68–66 with 2:39 remaining.

Carter's clutch shot was part of a run in which the Otters scored on seven of their final nine possessions. The defense did its share, holding the Lumberjacks to just five points over that span to seal the win.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Andre Ferguson grabbed the rebound of a Robert Lewis 3–point attempt with three seconds remaining.

JAHVON'S 1K WATCH…By scoring seven points in Saturday's win over Humboldt State, Jahvon Johnson became the sixth player in Otter history to score 1,000 for his career. He now has 1,002 points in an Otter uniform.

MORE JAHVON SCORING… Jahvon Johnson needs three points to pass Joe Mitchell (2006–09) for the No. 5 spot on the Otter career scoring list. He is 19 points behind Dexter Amey (2001–02) for the No. 4 spot. Alex Fertig (2013–16) owns the Otter record with 1,370 points.

DOUBLE THE FUN… With the Otter women earning their own win over Humboldt State, 62–55, Saturday afternoon, CSUMB swept a men's/women's doubleheader for the first time since victimizing Stanislaus State twice on Feb. 24, 2017.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB, 20–POINT EDITION… Charlie Tooley became the fourth Otter to score 20 points in a game when he lit Humboldt State for a season–high 21 Saturday evening. He is the first Otter to do it off then bench this season. The other members of the club are Damian Wilson and Maurice Woods (twice each) and Jahvon Johnson, who owns the team season high with 26 points.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Charlie Tooley 21; REBOUNDS: Ben Carter 8; ASSISTS: Jahvon Johnson/Maurice Woods 2; BLOCKS: Joseph Bosetti/J.R. Schilling/Jared Williams 1; STEALS: Andre Ferguson 2.

THE LAST WORD… "Tonight, especially in the second half, we were a team. There really isn't anything else I could ask for." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will begin a rare split week with a road doubleheader at Chico State Thursday (Dec. 12). The women will tip–off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip–off at 7:30 p.m.
