Broncos Race Back To Earn A 93–75 Win Over Otters

Damian Wilson scores 24; Jahvon Johnson passes Davion Berry on career scoring list

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay sprinted to an 18–point lead in the first half, but visiting Cal Poly Pomona raced back with 53 second–half points to earn a 93–75 win Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

Junior Damian Wilson (Inglewood/Taft HS) led the Otters with 24 points and six rebounds. Charlie Tooley (Granite Bay HS) came off the bench to score 12 points. Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) added nine points and a team–high three assists.

CSUMB went on a 23–3 run midway through the first half to take its biggest lead at 36–18 with five minutes remaining. Cal Poly responded with a 16–3 burst of its own over the final four minutes of the period to trim the halftime deficit to 42–40.

The teams traded leads in the early stages of the second half before a Riley Schaefer jumper gave the Broncos the lead for good at 57–55 with 12:53 remaining. Although the Otters never again got over the hump, the game stayed close until the final four minutes, when a 15–3 Pomona spurt made the final outcome appear more lopsided than the actual game.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… BJ Standley completed a traditional 3–point play to give Cal Poly an 87–72 lead with 2:35 remaining.

20–20 VISION… Damian Wilson has scored 20+ points in his first two games as an Otter. He is the first Otter to score 20 or more points in consecutive games since Jahvon Johnson did it in three straight from Dec. 2–17, 2017.

JOHNSON PASSES BERRY ON SCORING LIST… Jahvon Johnson scored nine points Saturday to move past Davion Berry (950) and into seventh place on the Otter career scoring list with 953 points. He needs eight points to pass Devoughn Lamont for the No. 6 spot and 47 to become the sixth player in Otter history to score 1,000 points.

FROM DOWNTOWN: After making 13 more from beyond the arc Saturday versus Cal Poly Pomona, the Otters are on pace to make 243 3–pointers in 2019–20. They made 242 3–pointers last season, good for No. 3 on the CSUMB single–season list. The Otters have made 545 3–pointers in two–plus seasons under Isaac Williams, including a record 254 in 2017–18.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Damian Wilson 24; REBOUNDS: Damian Wilson 6; ASSISTS: Jahvon Johnson 3; BLOCKS: Ben Carter/Jared Williams 1; STEALS: Jahvon Johnson 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play their final nonconference game of 2019 when they travel to the Central Valley to take on Pac West Conference foe Fresno Pacific Tuesday (Nov. 26). Tip–off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
