Otters Can’t Subdue Gators In Four–Set Defeat

Jenna Tobin leads the offesne with 15 kills; Sophia Torres serves four aces

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay played strong for three sets Saturday night, but it wasn't enough to subdue visiting San Francisco State, which held on for a 25–21, 21–25, 25–21, 25–15 win in The Kelp Bed.

Junior outside hitter Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) led the Otter offense with 15 kills. Freshman middle blocker Mollin Helfrich (Pinole/Salesian Prep) added nine kills against no errors for a .529 attack percentage. Sophomore setter Sophia Torres (Temecula/Chaparral HS) passed 35 assists and served four aces.

The first three sets were tight until the end. But the Gators raced to 12–2 lead to open the fourth and the Otters never got closer than nine points the rest of the way.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… A pair of Bailey Johnson kills and two Jessica Haynie aces keyed a 12–2 SFSU run to open the fourth set.

TOP 25 TOBIN… With 15 kills Saturday versus San Francisco State, Jenna Tobin cracked the CSUMB season Top 25 for kills for the second consecutive season, this time with 258. She collected 272 kills en route to earning All–CCAA honors as a sophomore in 2018.

SETTING THE STANDARD… Sophia Torres added 35 assists to her ledger Saturday versus San Francisco State, giving her 577 for the season. She slipped past Whitney Hirst (576 in 2016) for No. 10 on the Otter single–season list.

NEW KIDS ON THE BLOCK… Hannah Haveman moved into the CSUMB Top 25 for blocks in a season Saturday night. With three assists versus San Francisco State, she claims a share of 22nd place with 67 total blocks. Freshman Mollin Helfrich is knocking on the door of that list as well. With 58 blocks, she needs eight more to earn a spot in the Top 25.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jenna Tobin 15; KILLS: Jenna Tobin 15; BLOCKS: Hannah Haveman/Mollin Helfrich/Baylie Pierson 3; ACES: Sophia Torres 4; DIGS: Madi Lombardi 21.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for the last time in 2019 with a trip that beings at No. 1 ranked Cal State San Bernardino Friday (Nov. 8). First serve in Coussoulis Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
